2. Do you think...
Edited on Tue Sep-07-04 01:06 PM by cease_fire
Do you think that Ass Face will finally attend a funeral after 1000 of our Brother, Sisters, Father, Mothers, Sons and Daughters have been slaughtered?

Shrub's got a lot of pull with the Fundamentalist Islamic community. He said "Bring it on" and they did.

On Edit:

Let them try to make it an event. Just let them try...

How do you eulogize a failed policy that cost 1,000 Americans their lives?

Vote.

Kerry needs to tell the truth to America: those men died for a misguided adventure that has made America less safe, not more.

or other breaking and important news which will wipe the 1,000th soldier mislead into this mess from the headlines.

The 1000 will stay at the top of the news for 10 minutes before they wheel out DHS for another terror alert or a nabbed Al Qeda member or something else.

Stock up on your duct tape NOW before it's too late.

A very dubious distinction indeed.

18. More than 1,000 casualties
<18:12 PDT, Sept. 2, 2004>

http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/index.html

(page 15)

More than 1,000 casualties

Juan Cole (with an assist from a reader) notes on his blog today that the anticipated death of the 1,000th American soldier in Iraq already happened sometime in the last few weeks. According to the military and foreign policy watchdog GlobalSecurity.org, by the end of August 1,012 U.S. service members had died.

Why haven't you heard about it? In part, statistical methodology. GlobalSecurity.org states in its methodology section "at times our total count can be rather larger than the numbers reported by some news organizations. We list a number of people as unidentified pending notification of next of kin. We count people as soon as they get killed, while others wait until they are named."

While the "official" 1000th death will probably be announced sometime this month, there's another big story out there along with that somber milestone. In August, GlobalSecurity.org reports, the number of U.S. soldiers wounded in Iraq doubled to 1,112 from the July total of 533, making it the worst month for American casualties since the war began.

19. Can someone tell me what exactly these men died for?
"stability" in Iraq? Internet cafes?

I'd like to see THAT on TV: "My son died so that Iraqis could have internet cafes".

If Bush wins, I'm getting my son out of here. I'm moving to another country. They're not getting my son.

27. yes, the Bush plan was a "free market utopia"
Edited on Tue Sep-07-04 01:55 PM by Nordic
and their plan went very badly indeed.

It's in the new Harper's, an article I can't recommend highly enough.

Everybody says "Bush didn't have a plan." WRONG. He had a plan. It just didn't work. The plan was for this corporate utopia, and it backfired bigtime. Why? Sheer incompetence.

Follow the money. Remember that people are really stupid a LOT of the time.

on edit: something else fascinating in that article: The United States broke the geneva conventions not only by torturing prisoners, but by the way they did business.

I didn't realize that the Geneva Conventions weren't just about human rights, but were about the way occupying countries could conduct themselves in the countries they've defeated. The US broke almost every rule you could, then tried to do an end run around the rules by setting up the early Iraqi "soveirgnty". In effect they created a loophole for themselves after the fact.

37. Article by Naomi Klein in this month's Harpers
Agreed, it was a fascinating article, especially when paired with Lewis Lapham's history of the takeover of the media by the neo-cons. He mentions in his article, that in the mid-80s he was offered 200K per year to edit a neo-con type version of Harpers. They said he would be paid even if he quit or retired. I imagine that the quid pro quo would be that he wouldn't participate in any competing (non neo-con) magazines or media. He didn't take it. But if they can make these kinds of offers to silence potential intelligent critics, it tells you a thing or two about the current state of the media.

Yes, this issue is highly recommended.

24. Senators Ask Where $8.8 Bln in Iraq Funds Went
http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/news/story.jsp?&idq=/ff/story/0002/20040819/1513984860.htm&photoid=20040814WHT202D&floc=NW_1-T

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - At least $8.8 billion in Iraqi funds that was given to Iraqi ministries by the former U.S.-led authority there cannot be accounted for, according to a draft U.S. audit set for release soon.

The audit by the Coalition Provisional Authority's own Inspector General blasts the CPA for "not providing adequate stewardship" of at least $8.8 billion from the Development Fund for Iraq that was given to Iraqi ministries.

The audit was first reported on a Web site earlier this month by journalist and retired Col. David Hackworth. A U.S. official confirmed the contents of the leaked audit cited by Hackworth (www.hackworth.com) were accurate.

The development fund is made up of proceeds from Iraqi oil sales, frozen assets from foreign governments and surplus from the U.N. Oil for Food Program. Its handling has already come under fire in a U.N.-mandated audit released last month.

<snip>

One of the main benefactors of the Iraq funds was Texas-based firm Halliburton, which was paid more than a billion dollars out of those funds to bring in fuel for Iraqi civilians.

The monitoring board said despite repeated requests it had not been given access

to U.S. audits of contracts held by Halliburton, which was once run by Vice President Dick Cheney, and other firms that used the development funds.

They died to support Halliburton.

American history, and also world history. Tomorrow he starts shooting for 2000 dead Americans and as many other people as he can kill.

What a guy. Hitler and Stalin would be proud to know that an American leader has sunk to the depths of their depravity.

They are smiling in hell and awaiting Bu$h's arrival.

28. 999 . . .
999 Red Balloons

You and I in a little toy shop
buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got
Set them free at the break of dawn
'Til one by one, they were gone
Back at base, bugs in the software
Flash the message, "Something's out there"
Floating in the summer sky
999 red balloons go by.

999 red balloons floating in the summer sky
Panic bells, it's red alert
There's something here from somewhere else
The war machine springs to life
Opens up one eager eye
Focusing it on the sky
Where 999 red balloons go by.

999 Decision Street, 999 ministers meet
To worry, worry, super-scurry
Call the troops out in a hurry
This is what we've waited for
This is it boys, this is war
The president is on the line
As 999 red balloons go by.

999 Knights of the air
ride super-high-tech jet fighters
Everyone's a Silverhero
Everyone's a Captain Kirk
With orders to identify
To clarify and classify
Scramble in the summer sky
As 999 red balloons go by.

999 dreams I have had
In every one a red balloon
It's all over and I'm standin' pretty
In this dust that was a city
If I could find a souvenier
Just to prove the world was here...
And here is a red balloon
I think of you and let it go.

like toys who together with the politicians and policy directors amass mmillions to spread around for favorite intentions - takinf over the world and the U.S. funds - paying off the media, supporting guest experts, buying off countries, etc etc etc - money to operate a secret sub-government, just like in the Iran-Contra days - same players.
