Former UN chief: bomb was payback for collusion with US
THE reason the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad were bombed is because the UN has been taken over by the US and turned into a “dark joke” and a “malignant force”, according to one of the UN’s most internationally respected former leaders.

Denis Halliday, the former UN Assistant Secretary-General and UN Humanitarian Co- ordinator in Iraq, attacked the UN as an aggressive arm of US foreign policy in the immediate aftermath of the truckbomb attack on the UN mission in Baghdad which killed at least 23 people – many of whom were Halliday’s former friends and colleagues.

“The West sees the UN as a benign organisation, but the sad reality in much of the world is that the UN is not seen as benign,” said Halliday, who was nominated for the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize. “The UN Security Council has been taken over and corrupted by the US and UK, particularly with regard to Iraq, Palestine and Israel.

“In Iraq, the UN imposed sustained sanctions that probably killed up to one million people. Children were dying of malnutrition and water-borne diseases. The US and UK bombed the infrastructure in 1991, destroying power, water and sewage systems against the Geneva Convention. It was a great crime against Iraq.

1. The problem is in the undemocratic Security Council
where the 5 permanent members exercise their veto.

Previous attempts in the UN General Assembly to disband the Security Council, or do away with the veto, have failed.

4. Why is exercising their veto a problem?
The problem is the US ignores their resolution anyway.

6. The US has stymied the UN by using its veto
to prevent UN intervention in several regions of the world where American corporate and/or political interests were involved.

3. Yes....unfortunately, it's true.....While I Applaude the UN and want it
Strong.....when we Invaded Iraq with GB......I knew that it was our puppet......But, I also knew that their hands were tied.

I want a stronger UN......but I don't see how we can get there....as long as America and GB hold all the economic cards. It's China which has to be the one.....and I don't see them standing up against their biggest trading partner....

7. UNITY between china and russia is growing
and they allready got asia and then there is also the EU as a replacement if necessary.

china actually holds a LOT of leverage with their current position with their huge internal market not to mention their large industrial base and if there were to be a UNITY BLOCK to rise in opposition to the US aggression they would be the end to us for sure and it is what i think that possibility keeps our PNAC fiends up for hours.

8. I've wondered about a China/Russia collaberation....but with cheap China
Edited on Sat Aug-23-03 08:03 PM by KoKo01
imports keeping us folks buying at Target and Walmart.......I wonder.........still if we stop buying because we are bankrupt that does open the door for a China/Russia alliance.

But, it depends on who the next "booming economy sucker" is next up to buy the cheap China goods if we "go down." If I knew enough to figure that one out....I could go work for the Brookings Institute!

But, yes.....there's more hurdles coming for our economy.....I dread, to think about.......and the coming alliances and reshuffling that Bush has done in his "New World Order" (Poppy coined the phrase) are something we need to focus on.....maybe here...because we see things before the others do........

9. I Agree
Just bought a new Dell Notebook, had a few problems with it and was privilaged to speak with Dell CSR in India who could barely speak english. Same with Microshaft....

Maybe Dimbo, his father and the idiot before him thought little about exporting jobs overseas but I don't take that lightly.

If a guy in India can't solve my software problem, what makes me think the guidance chips for the Crusie Missles from China are any more reliable?

I think the US needs to be less concerned with profit and more self-sufficient.
