Reports that Saddam Hussein's top aide Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri is in custody in Iraq have proved unfounded.
Initial announcements by the Iraqi authorities suggested he had been arrested on Saturday while receiving treatment at a clinic near Tikrit.

Iraqi officials now say Saddam Hussein's former top deputy was not arrested as had been announced Sunday.
The Interior Ministry says Monday medical tests indicate that a person arrested during a raid Sunday near Tikrit is not Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri.

Iraqi officials announced Sunday that Saddam's top aide -- one of the country's most wanted men -- had been captured by Iraqi forces near Tikrit, but later the defense minister Hazem Shaalan said the report was "baseless."

In another development, U.S. military officials say a suspected car bomb blast killed seven U.S. Marines in military convoy on the outskirts of Fallujah today. The powerful blast destroyed two U.S. vehicles.
