Fewer Texans support war, poll shows

56% say it's worthwhile, down from 62% recorded in May

By JIM LANDERS / The Dallas Morning News

Support among Texans for the war in Iraq is waning, although 56 percent agree Saddam Hussein's rule of that country made the war worthwhile, according to the most recent Texas Poll. In May, a similar poll of 1,000 Texans found 62 percent agreed with President Bush's decision to launch the war. The summer result was the lowest recorded since the war began in March 2003.

Texans were contacted between Aug. 9 and Aug. 26, when U.S. forces were fighting a running battle in An Najaf with the militia of dissident Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. Two-thirds of those polled again disapproved of the way things were going in the Iraq war.

The latest Texas Poll found Texans uneasy about the overall war on terrorism. Forty-five percent of Texans agreed with Mr. Bush's assertion that the war in Iraq has made the United States safer, and 50 percent disagreed.

"That surprised me," said Texas Poll director Ty Meighan. "That's a point that Bush has been making, and he's fairly popular in Texas. So not all Texans are buying that argument."

2. I live in the Dallas Fort Worth area of TX
And I have not seen as many Bush/Cheney bump stickers or yard signs, as there were the last time around. When I do spot a sticker, it is usually on a SUV.

I think that is a tell tell sign that people here are starting to wake up!

Texans can usually detect "bushit" once we step in it a few times...

3. |n East Texas
I don't hear much talk of politics from either side. I think people are just embarrassed about the situation. I am surprised Kerry has been such an incompetent candidate so far, though. He's not cratered as badly as Dukakis yet, but he's well on the way.

The economy is usually worse here than elsewhere in Texas, much less the nation, but that is not true right now because for one thing oil and natural gas prices are so high and there's still a lot of it in the ground where I live. Our county taxes may actually go down because of the increased mineral valuations.

I'd say * will easily carry the region, but may not get 65 percent of the vote as he did here last time. I think statewide he got 59 percent in 2000 and I was surprised it was that low. I thought he'd get about two-thirds everywhere. He got nearly 70 percent when he ran for reelection for governor against Garry Mauro in 1998.

4. How many native sons has Texas lost in this mistake?
It would be interesting to know how many in proportion to population and income how many of the dead and injured are from "The Great State of Texas".

Some people don't change their minds unless the price is a personal one.
