Putin's policy in Chechnya a `total failure'
LONDON-Russian President Vladimir Putin, who casts himself as
his country's only hope for security and stability, now must deal
with the disastrous end of the Beslan school hostage-taking.

Faced with day-long scenes of chaos and bloodshed, and the risk
of conflict engulfing the northern Caucasus region, Putin had little
to say to a traumatized nation.

"Putin mostly prefers to be silent. It means that he himself doesn't
know what to do," says Alexi Malachenko, a Moscow-based
expert on the Caucasus.

What's clear is that Putin's policy of trying to crush separatist
rebels in Chechnya with military might while imposing hand-picked
local leaders has utterly failed, analysts say.

6. This would be a good talking point for Kerry
Maybe have General Clark talk about it on the various news shows and then have Kerry address it in a speech.

8. Caucasus region has rich history of hostage-taking
AP , Moscow
Saturday, Sep 04, 2004,Page 6

For centuries, at least as far back as Leo Tolstoy's youth, hostage-takings and kidnappings have been a feared part of life in Chechnya and other parts of Russia's disorderly North Caucasus region.

But over the past decade, the actions have grown in size and severity and psychological shock -- with the seizure of a school full of children crossing a disturbing new threshold.

Although the identity of the heavily armed and explosives-laden raiders who took hundreds of hostages Wednesday in North Ossetia hasn't been established, suspicion fell on rebels from neighboring Chechnya or other insurgents taking a cue from that republic's chaos and violence.

9. It always fails. How many times do leaders have to play this stupid game
of trying to bomb, blast, blow up "terrorists", expecting this to end terrorism. Terrorism ending terrorism. Gee. What a good idea. Never mind that it has not once worked in the history of mankind.

The ONLY way to end terrorism is to quit fucking with people's countries and quit stealing their stuff.

11. Are you connecting these terrorists to Bush?
That's tinfoil. I hate Bush too, but it's simply loony to try to put something like this under a "false flag" operation.

12. You just can't be responsible for killing over 300,000 and expect those
remaining to love you. Bush should take heed.
