N.Y. will still buy electronic voting machines

ALBANY -- A recent report from a team of Johns Hopkins University computer-security experts that detailed how easily electronic voting machines could be manipulated has triggered a minor panic as states prepare to overhaul the voting system.

In Maryland and Georgia, states that have agreed to shell out millions for new machines, some officials called for postponing the switch to ATM-style machines until security is enhanced.

But in New York, officials say they're not troubled -- they still plan to push for phasing out mechanical lever-style machines. Because the new machines don't have to be ready until 2006 , there's enough time to make sure all the bugs are worked out, they say.

''It didn't give us pause,'' said Lee Daghlian, spokesman for the New York State Board of Elections, ''in the sense that we won't eventually buy electronic machines. Maybe we're just not going to purchase this generation of machine.''
