Bush May Be a Cowboy But Republicans Love That
Wed Sep 1, 2004 02:45 PM ET

By Caroline Humer
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The thousands of Republicans in New York may not agree with President Bush on abortion rights or gay marriage but they know what they like about him -- and it's often the same things his critics hate.

"I like his decisiveness as a leader. I like his ability to take action. I like that he doesn't care very much what other people think about him," said Christopher Tossetti, an 18-year-old student from San Marino, California, who will cast his first presidential vote in November.

Bush's positions on the war in Iraq, abortion rights, same-sex marriage and limiting stem cell research brought hundreds of thousands of protesters to New York this week.

The U.S. president's policies are even more reviled abroad, with polls showing a rise in disapproval of the United States during his term. Foreigners dislike his go-it-alone approach to foreign policy and his unwillingness to compromise.

Yeah, that was lovely.

6. Young Mr. Tossetti,
In the event that Bush* is elected, I hope you live through whatever nightmare you are going to experience when you are drafted next year.

Moron.

12. He lives in San Marino
which is "old" money southern California. Not surprised one bit he likes Bush, and Dad will keep him out of the draft.

9. Anybody here watching the show "Big Brother"?
They have a guy on there nicknamed "Cowboy". He's dumb as a post and that's demeaning to posts. Yeah, I see some resemblance between Shrub and that "Cowboy".

14. I am and
it's no wonder something about that guy bothers me. Yeah he is as dumb as a post can't speak or pronounce words any better than chimp. "Cowboy" just like chimp is not very bright but still people including some in the house are finding him sooooo likeable and that kind of "likeable" could save both of them. :puke:

11. These GOPers wouldn't stand for surgeon with a "cowboy" reputation.
Nor would they stand for an airline pilot with the reputation of being a "cowboy." Let's turn to Merriam-Webster On-line to see why:

Main Entry: cow·boy
Pronunciation: -"boi
Function: noun
1 : one who tends cattle or horses; especially : a usually mounted cattle-ranch hand
2 : a rodeo performer

It is not the cattle-ranch hand denotation of "cowboy" that we are dealing with here folks. It is the rodeo performer denotation, with its "dangerous and reckless" connotations.

So why do the GOPers, against all reason, support a man who wallows in the image of a beholden-to-nobody, gunslinging, loner? It speaks to their own mental conditions.

13. So, if I wear scrubs, that makes me a surgeon?
Bush is no cowboy. Real cowboys work hard and sometimes get hurt. There isn't any way the SS is going to allow him to do anything where they can't minimize the potential damage.

The ranch in Crawford was bought when, when he was in his mid-fifties at earliest? A real cowboy would not have tolerated living off a ranch that much.

I read an interview where he was pointing out various trees, etc. He's probably a decent arborealist. He can handle a saw and clear brush, but that doesn't make him a cowboy. Neither does driving a pickup or wearing the clothes, any more than wearing scrubs makes me a surgeon.
