Russian School Seized by Gunmen, 200 Children Held Hostage
Sept. 1 (Bloomberg) -- A group of some 20 armed terrorists wearing explosives strapped to their bodies is holding at least 200 children hostage at a school in southern Russia, the fourth terrorist attack in Russia in the past eight days.
Itar-Tass reported that as many as 400 hostages may be being held, without saying where it obtained the information.
Rossiya television showed troops surrounding the school in Beslan in the republic of North Ossetia and a girl running from the school. Shooting was audible on the broadcast. There are no fatalities, said a spokeswoman at the North Ossetian government in Vladikavkaz who declined to be identified. Rossiya television said some 40 parents and teachers are also being held at the school.
