32. Prior to 1943, it wasn't illegal in US military
James Jones' follow-on book(to From to Eternity), The Pistol) talks about it openly. In William Manchester's book, Goodbye Darkness, he talks about his platoon sargeant(a Marine Gunny) being a homosexual, who was caught performing an homosexual act after 1943, and was sentenced to Portsmouth Naval Prison.
The do-gooder ladies and the right reverends had to protect our boys, from evil dooers(or is that evil DUers?).

68. He Used to Have His "Beard" Before Elections, But Not Anymore.
Arnold and Maria know he's gay.

He has never missed a single opportunity to vote FOR any anti-gay legislation in Congress.

He also ALWAYS steers interviews that even touch on the subject of homosexuality, gay rights, marriage and such. Check it out, you'll see for yourself.

The last time he was on Bill Mahr's program, Mahr would bring the subject up, all the other guests would chime in and then, when it was Dorothy (he's from Kansas) Drier's time to address THE subject he unartfully changed it to September 11th, blah, blah, blah.

HI've watched this shit for over ten years. He ALWAYS dodges the gay question and the interviewer just doesn't get "it" and Drier skates.

I hope he gets busted like Sullivan and the rest.

He's really hurt gay and lesbian Americans for decades with his own self-loathing.

I hope he' pooping in his pants at the convention about being outed.

69. These Jerks Are Killing Gay People For Their Own Ambitions.
Couples lose their children.

Women and men are thrown out of the Armed Forces after being there for nearly their entire lives with no benefits, nothing. Just a piece of paper that essentially says that they dishonored the Armed Services. I have a dear friend in her sixties that this happened to. It breaks your heart.

Children get the living shit beat out of them and they are terrorized at public schools because they are different.

Men and women are fired from their jobs, kicked out of their homes because they are gay.

And we worry about hurting the feelings of closeted queers in Congress that perpetuate this shit? Fuck them. Out them all.

Glad to see you agree. I have no guilt on this at all.

Personally, I hope the exposure is embarrassing as hell for them like this idiot's phone calls.

12. I'm of two minds on this
It's absolutely horrible that anyone, anywhere, should be discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation. It's just plain stupid and self-destructive of our society to endorse this kind of witch-hunt attitude that somehow a person's performance at a job is immaterial if their sexuality is suspect.

On the other hand, it's Schrock ideological fellow travelers who have made it so. I'm unaware of any advocacy that Schrock has engaged in to blunt the bigoted attitude of his fellow Republicans, and so the day when this sort of nonsense is no longer tolerated in our society may have been hastened by more than one day today.

The folks who live this double life are the biggest hypocrites.

16. They came for me
I agree with you wholeheartedly...Sexual orientation has no place here at all and the day it means absolutely nothing will be a great day indeed.

Re: your 2nd paragraph...I'm reminded of the old quote from WWII (I'm paraphrasing because I can't think of the exact quote right now)... First they came for the Jews and I said nothing because I'm not a Jew...Then they came for the learned and I said nothing because I am not learned...Then they came for me, and there was no one left to say anything.

You have to stand up for what is right or you lose one way or the other.

26. Pastor Martin Niemoller
He counts the various folks whom the Nazis targeted, and the "good" Germans who didn't speak up and didn't want to get involved because they weren't trade unionists, or communists, or Jews. When the Nazis were reduced to eating their own, no one was left to speak up for the good Germans, and they suffered the same fate as those who had gone before.

Strangely enough, the most effective counter to such lying rat bastard tactics is to live a life of integrity. After all the partisan sniping against John Kerry, I note that he still has three Purple Hearts, a Silver Star and a Bronze Star. And win or lose on November 2, he'll still have them.

18. Gays in public office
Anyone that is in public office and in the closet runs a great risk of being blackmailed or compromised. Seems to me that any gay person running for office should out themselves at that time and be proud of themselves as a human being. Any Repub that is gay should seriously think about dropping out of that party because the Repub. platform is definetly anti- gay. By staying it seems to me that they are endorsing discrimination.

This is getting like Clinton's impeachement, all the repukes suddenly having to admit their extramarital affairs, and resigning to try to set the example for Bill, and he just let 'em.

I think we should know all the closet queens like this guy in the GOP who is so hypocritical actually sponsoring repressive legislation.

I have it on scuttlebutt there is at least one GOP senator that is into sex with underage boys. I am guessing if there is one there are more with the way they are.

It would be funny to clean out the Congress just by pointing out their own moral 'failings' as defined by their own platform and sponsored legislation.

this is the way rethugs, or at least a goodly number are, they are against what they do....they abuse wives and children....why do I say that....because there are books written and studies done that show the worse offenders of incest are the most avid church goers.....

so here is another rethug....gay and putting for a discrimination bill against gays.....and on TV spouting off about the values we want in Virginia.....and not wanting Gays here....

51. RAW STORY BREAKS WITH AUDIO TAPE OF GAY SEX CALL
Edited on Mon Aug-30-04 07:36 PM by rawstory
http://rawstory.com

VIRGINIA REP. WHO COSPONSORED DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT TO RESIGN; TAPES OF GAY PHONE SEX CALLS...

EXCLUSIVE: GOP Republican was ranked 2nd most conservative in Congress by the conservative standard-bearer the National Journal

Rep. Ed Schrock, a two-term Republican congressman from Virginia, announced that he would resign abruptly today, citing unspecified allegations.

Schrock said only: “In recent weeks, allegations have surfaced that have called into question my ability to represent the citizens of Virginia’s Second Congressional Distict.” He would not elaborate on the allegations.

Over the past two weeks, a Washington-based Web site has spread claims that Schrock was gay, and the Virginia Pilot noted this in their article but failed to elaborate. That site claims that gay activists are in posession of tapes of several phone calls to gay phone sex lines.

...

Raw Story’s transcript of the tape is as follows.

“Uh, hi, I weigh 200 pounds, I’m 6′4″ (inaudible) blond hair….very muscular, very buffed up, uh, very tanned, uh, I just like to get together a guy from time to time, just to, just to play. I’d like him to be in very good shape, flat stomach, good chest, good arms, well hung, cut, uh, just get naked, play, and see what happens, nothing real heavy duty, but just, fun time, go down on him, he can go down on me, and just take it from there… hope to hear from you. Bye.”

72. Story now running in THE ADVOCATE
Finally, something goes national

Va. congressman to retire over "allegations"

Just two months before he was expected easily to win a third term in the House of Representatives, Republican congressman Ed Schrock of Virginia Beach called off his reelection bid because of unspecified "allegations."

"In recent weeks, allegations have surfaced that have called into question my ability to represent the citizens of Virginia's Second Congressional District," said Schrock in a written statement. "After much thought and prayer, I have come to the realization that these allegations will not allow my campaign to focus on the real issues facing our nation and region. Therefore, as of today, I am stepping aside and will no longer be the Republican nominee for Congress in Virginia's Second Congressional District."

Schrock's statement did not address the subject of the "allegations" against him, and none has been reported in the mainstream media. Indeed, the Associated Press story on his announcement fails to mention what the "allegations" might be.

But Schrock's announcement comes shortly after the launch of an online "outing" campaign, in which the authors of various blogs have reported that Schrock had posted voicemail messages on commercial telephone services soliciting other men for sex.

The most persistent allegations have come from blogactive.com, which now has posted an audio file that the blog alleges is one of Schrock's voice-mail solicitations. "I just like to get together with a guy from time to time just to play," says the voice on the recording, which goes on to suggest specific gay sex acts.

52. Ashe is a veteran of the Iraq War
http://www.davidasheforcongress.com/about.php

Recalled to Active Duty and Deployed
Upon return to active duty, David was assigned as deputy legal counsel to the commanding general of all west coast Marine forces with geographic responsibility for the Middle East. For most of 2002, David was part of Operation Enduring Freedom deployed to Kuwait as sole-legal counsel to the commanding general of a special-purpose coalition task force, working with Czechs, Germans and Kuwaitis. At the end of 2002, David returned home and married Bethanie Shaw Szugda in December of 2002.

Assigned to an Infantry Battalion in Iraq
In March 2003, David was deployed again. Within a few weeks, he was attached to an infantry battalion assigned to the Al Muthanna region of Iraq. David was the sole coalition legal representative assigned to restore the judicial system in an area which covered approximately 1/9 of Iraq.

In the streets of Iraq, all day every day, David fired crooked Baathist judges, appointed new judges, drafted a local government charter, helped train police officers and was able to secure over a quarter of a million dollars from Ambassador Bremer's office to restore law in this area of Iraq. He traveled overland to Basrah, Baghdad, Nasiriya and other areas to get the job done. He also participated in foot patrols in their region to ensure security and Marine presence.

59. So long Mr. big-wig holier-than-thou
You will not be missed.
If they could have just waited another week, it would have been too late to nominate another candidate. There are Repugs. coming out of the woodwork to try to win his seat. There is a meeting tomorrow night to decide.
David Ashe is an excellent, hard working, down to earth candidate.
I hope that all y'all will give him some help...now that his campaign will be turned upside down with a new R candidate to beat.

People are nuts if they think that having a picture of the wife and kids, or wearing a clerical collar, makes a person an outstanding citizen.

86. My theory, since you asked.
Oops, nobody asked. Here it is anyway.

I have seen the national Republican party encourage a campaign of a local guy -- good looking Hispanic, not much going for him other than that. A local Hispanic gay guy about his age told me he had heard the rumors that the guy was gay. This was not the first time the party seemed to be trying to promote a closeted gay candidate.

My theory: these folks high in the party like nothing better than being able to control someone in office. Money controls some. Threats work for others. But, a number of people have something they might not want on the front pages. Being gay while staying in a traditional marriage would certainly rank high on that list. I think they purposely recruit some of these gay folks for higher political office, raise them from pups, in order to control them later with threats of blackmail.

If that theory holds any water, it would also be one more "reason" for the Republicans to not want gay lifestyles to become accepted -- it removes one tool of control of their officeholders.

For the most part, gay people have been loathe to out anyone.

Clearly, with DOMA and the attempt to pass a constitutional amendment against gay marriage, the stakes have gotten higher and more intense. And, some folks have just had enough of the hypocrisy.

I once sat next to Barbara Jordan and asked her to sponsor ENDA or its equivalent (not sure if it had that name then). She said she couldn't do it at that time -- there would need to be more co-sponsors from the South, not just her and maybe one other. She promised to do what she could in the halls and back rooms though.

I would never have outed Barbara Jordan. I do believe she was doing what she felt she could at the time. I don't think she would have actively worked to pass a DOMA type thing. But, she did not come out.
