Liam Fox will use his appearance at the Republican convention in New York this week to mend fences with the White House after Michael Howard's stinging rebuke to President George W Bush.
The Conservative co-chairman, who is leading a Tory delegation to the four-day American election rally, will rub shoulders with senior members of the President's staff.
On Saturday the Tory leader issued a "declaration of independence" from the White House following a report that Karl Rove, Bush's closest adviser, had barred him from the White House.
Mr Rove reportedly told senior Tories earlier this year that the snub - unheard of for a senior politician in the so-called special relationship - was punishment for Mr Howard's criticisms of Tony Blair.
