Scorpions say have more info on Equatorial Guinea coup
August 27, 2004, 13:46

The Scorpions have information on a number of people outside South Africa's borders believed to be involved in the financing of a coup in Equatorial Guinea.

Speaking at his last official function in Bloemfontein today Bulelani Ngcuka, the outgoing director of public prosecutions, says they are prepared to share this information with international law enforcement agencies. Ngcuka was in Bloemfontein to open the fifth regional office of the Scorpions. But the crime busting organisations' latest high profile arrest, that of Mark Thatcher, is still on everyone's lips.

Ngcuka says that they have information on a number of other suspects outside South African borders. "At this stage we are outside the reach of our law but we are conducting further investigations to see what we can do and we are willing to co-operate with other law enforcement agencies and to give them the information that we have."

Ngcuka, who leaves the Direcorate of Public Prosecutions at the end of this month, also sent out a strong warning to foreign nationals involved in crime. "In this country no-one is above the law ... does not matter what your parentage is or your lineage is... and secondly we will not allow our country to be used as a haven for people to conduct and commit offences in other parts of the world."
