Alaska Senator Resigns in Face of Recall

DAN JOLING

Associated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - State Sen. Scott Ogan resigned a day after losing a legal bid to stop a recall effort by a group that claimed the Republican had used his legislative position to do favors for an energy company that had employed him as a consultant.

"The ongoing controversy surrounding the recall process has diverted my attention and the attention of my constituents to the point it adversely affects my daily activities as a senator," Ogan wrote Wednesday in a resignation letter to Gov. Frank Murkowski. The letter was released by Ogan's office.

The governor, also a Republican, will appoint someone to complete the remaining two years of Ogan's term, Murkowski spokesman Mike Chambers said.

"We thank him for his service," Chambers said. "Beyond that, we have no further comment."

A group calling itself the Ogan is So Gone Committee began collecting signatures for the recall petition in January, three months after Ogan was pressured into leaving a $40,000-a-year consulting job with Denver-based Evergreen Resources.

2. So instead of a recall election where the people get to decide,
a Republican governor gets to appoint. That is not how to get a repbulican. That is a Republican falling on his sword for his fellow Republicans. Now, they still get to keep the seat. Not a win for Dems.

Sorry, this "the glass is half full" Democrat sees a take down of any corrupt politician a plus.
:wtf:
So they shouldn't have threatened a recall?

4. I guess the theory is that the scandal would have made him vulnerable
in 2006, but by seating a new Puggy they've mended the flaw.

7. Since Statehood there has never been a Democratic Senator
We did have a Democratic Representative for a while but guess what happened to him. He dissappeared in a small plane. The plane has never been found.

10. This guy wasn't a US Senator. He was a STATE senator
And now he gets replaced in his State Lesgislative body by a GOP governor who will probably pick a strong candidate. They took a liability and made it a strength and DC has nothing to do with it.

13. Nick Begich
but of course he went down in a suspicious plane crash in 1972 w/ Hale Boggs.

Actually, they never found the plane or the bodies. Don't know much more about it than that.

9. We do not win on this
Now the Alaska GOP can replace a guy who might have been beaten in a recall, dare we hope, by a DEM and a GOP governor will appoint a replacement. The Dems just lost a chance due to this manuver. The GOP gets to put in a stronger guy now where there was once a liablilty to them.

6. State Senator not Federal Senator
Edited on Fri Aug-27-04 12:04 PM by Bandit
We are still stuck with two Republican Senators in Congress. there is a chance though that one of those Senators will lose to a Democrat this year. It is about forty-eight to fifty-two with the numbers probably being on the Republican's side. People are very unhappy with Lisa Murkowski but we are a Very Republican State. Knowles does have a lot of Republican support though so it is anybodies guess.

8. Does the governor have another daughter?
He could name her to replace the State Senator, or just leave the seat empty for a couple of months. His daughter who he appointed to the US Senate seat should be coming home soon and he can appoint her again!!

11. Mm Hmmm...
"The ongoing controversy surrounding the recall process has diverted my attention and the attention of my constituents to the point it adversely affects my daily activities as a senator."

"Oh yeah, and I'm a money-grubbing bag of excrement too."
