French Suspended
By Nick Voll

Oregon City -
The Clackamas County Prosecutor who appeared in an ad against John Kerry has been suspended from his job, but not for speaking out. Al French has been the target of local protests after his appearance in a political ad questioning the the Democratic candidate's war record.

On Thursday he was placed on leave by the Clackamas County District Attorney's office. It wasn't for his statements against Kerry, but for lying about an extra-marital affair. Reports say French misled his former boss ten years ago to avoid getting fired.

French has faced a great deal of scrutiny since the ad first aired, with veterans calling for his resignation. He said in the spot that he had served with John Kerry, and that Kerry exaggerated his war record. He also signed an affidavit, swearing to tell the truth during the taping. French later admitted he had not served with Kerry, but relied on accounts from his friends.

That irked local veterans, who complained to the Oregon Bar Association. They say French violated his duty as a state official by lying on the affidavit, and can no longer be trusted.

5. Guess he wouldn't "resign with honor"
Ironic, eh? A guy who lied about stuff that happened 35 years ago loses his job for lying about something else that happened 10 years ago.

By the way, the question that hits me now is, if he lied ten years ago, why was he kept on the job for ten years?

37. Same question I have
Why does his lie 10 years ago come up now? It seems like a strange coincidence. I suspect they agreed he should be fired but didn't want it to be a political thing so they dredged up another reason.

50. Easy answer: ideology and payback
Remember, the bush family prizes and rewards the loyalty of its shills and stool pigeons. French could have been on the short list for a nice sinecure in the second term, or maybe some Halliburton stock options that would set him up for life.

And there's also the possibility that French just hates Kerry for the Winter Soldier testimony. It's not uncommon.

13. Here's the article from the Oregonian:
http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/front_page/109360837947360.xml

"Clackamas County prosecutor Alfred French, who called Sen. John Kerry a liar in a political commercial, acknowledged Thursday that he lied to his boss when confronted about an extramarital affair with a colleague.

Hours later, the Clackamas County district attorney's office said French had been placed on a 30-day paid leave while it conducts an investigation into his conduct.

French's former boss, James O'Leary, said he asked French about the rumored affair with a secretary about 10 years ago, but French denied it. O'Leary said he would have fired French if he'd admitted the relationship because it violated office policy."

He needs to focus on the issues Bush is trying to hide with this non-issue.

34. That's what Kerry has been doing
It is the media and the rest of us that have been all over this Swift Boat thing.

However, that is not to say Kerry shouldn't confront this fiasco or question Bu$h about his involvement with the group and how they came to be and who is behind them. If Kerry and the rest of us, handle this right, we can use his exploitation of these vets to our advantage.

31. You all helped with this. They are using the excuse of an affair 10
years ago, but I would bet that all the e-mails sent about this lying bag of dirt on his affadavit is the real story.

Thing is, it is only a 30 day suspension, what will happen when the story falls off the radar screen?

Let's all try to remember to check on this in a few weeks.

40. Let me see if I understand this correctly.
A person who is sworn to uphold the law lies on an affadavit.

This same person is given a "paid" 30 day leave of absence for
an affair 10 years ago.

Sounds like a reward rather than a penalty to me. :puke:

I thought the DAs office was to represent the state and was
not above the law. Guess I must be mistaken.

sworn affidavits."

French has yet to make a public statement about the controversy, but his boss has

53. More Bad News For French--State Bar Ethics Investigation
http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/news/1093521512261850.xml

Yup, the Oregon Bar is investigating Mr. French for ethics violations due to his affidavit. DU members probably among those e-mailing the Bar.

The Oregon State Bar has received several complaints about a Clackamas County prosecutor who said in a sworn affidavit that Sen. John Kerry lied about his Vietnam service, but then said he did not witness the events in question.

A spokeswoman said Wednesday that the bar has received 28 e-mails, calls and letters about Alfred French, a Clackamas County deputy district attorney. French appeared in a national television ad calling Kerry a liar, but later said he was relying on the word of wartime colleagues.

(Snip)

Some of the complaints to the Oregon State Bar accused French of violating legal ethics in signing the affidavit, in which he swore the facts were "within my personal knowledge or belief."

The secretary of state's Election Division also received a complaint about French. Both agencies are conducting investigations, but neither has determined whether the complaints are valid.

Now is the time to go after O'Neill for his ethics violations, such as defamation.
