New state GOP group supports Kerry (Oregonian)

Two relatives of former Gov. Vic Atiyeh and an ex-party official are among the defecting Bush supporters

Friday, August 27, 2004

JEFF MAPES

Democratic Sen. John Kerry's Oregon campaign on Thursday announced a new group of Republican supporters, including two relatives of former Gov. Vic Atiyeh and a recently departed member of the Republican State Central Committee.

There were no major statewide figures among the 21 members of the newly formed Oregon Republicans for Kerry group, and GOP officials were quick to say the president still enjoys high levels of support among members of his party.

George Atiyeh said he voted for Bush in 2000 but thinks the president veered to the right instead of sticking with his promise to be a "compassionate conservative."

The party has "been taken over by right-wing conservatives who don't represent the mainstream values of the American people anymore," he said in a statement.

1. Interesting.
I wonder how viable is the possible development of a third party (4th actually, counting greens) made up of Moderate Republicans.

2. I'm stating the obvious, I think: the war for the Republican Party
has begun.

Buchanan's book, all these grassroots defectors, Cheney vs. Ralph Reed. It's going to accelerate rapidly.

3. good, it will be fun to watch.
I've felt that the GOP has been on a course of self-destruction since the rise and fall of Newt.

4. Kerry
I saw that on the news last night
They said that 80% of the women voters here in Oregon
would vote for Kerry
But we have to get them to vote
We have vote by mail, which works great

Now all we have to do is get that damn Bush campaign manager
here in Oregon, Molly Bordenaro to leave the state!!!
She is such a bitch

8. This Years GOP Platform Is Ultra Right
Against women's right to choose and against legal recognition of gay unions. They even fought about being against mental health programs for troubled youth. Jerry Falwell has taken over the GOP. Expect more desertions.

Today's GOP now stands for huge government interference into private lives, huge spending on warmongering, huge tax breaks for the rich creating deficits. Expect more desertions.

9. Ah yes

My prediction is running its course.

I have said the Conservative monster is really dead, but the corpse is still kicking around.

What will happen is if they LOSE to Kerry that Party will implode and moderate factions will begin to splinter off due to the takeover of the radical religious right. This could lead to moderate Republicans like Chafee moving to the Dems.

If they win (and this is the scary part) then Conservative Hell continues unabated. In their delusions of arrogance and wanting for a "new American century" they will unleash the most radical right wing assault in history...things such as

-Abortion completely outlawed backed by a Constitutional Amendment
-Evolution banned from public schools OR the movement toward a "public/parochial" school partnership
-More tax cuts for the rich
-Elimination of many social programs
-Head Start eliminated
-Public lands sold off at below market value to large corporations
-Social Security money funneled into the financial markets
-Near total dessmination of pollution rules
-Endangered Species Act abolished
-The persecution of left-leaning groups
-Censorship
-Prying into personal lives, computers, libary books, etc.
-An amendment staing gay people are two-third person
-Elimination of Truth In Advertising Laws
-More corporate monopolization

---and that is just what I can roll off the top of my head. This is where they are headed. Once they f***** us up good and hard it will usher in 50 years of Democratic rule.
