Poverty rate increases in Illinois
The ASSOCIATED PRESS
CHICAGO – The number of Illinoisans living in poverty increased slightly in 2003 while the state's median household income dropped, according to figures released Thursday by U.S. Census Bureau.
Illinois was one of 11 states where the poverty rate increased as the median household income decreased.
J. Fred Giertz, an economics professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, said the data comes as no surprise because the state was hit particularly hard by the last recession.
"I think that Illinois has been in a slow recovery mode," Giertz said. "It's on a rebound, but it's not rebounding as strongly as in some other parts of the country."
The state's poverty rate was 11.2 percent in 2002, but climbed to 11.8 percent in 2003. That's slightly lower than the national poverty rate of 12.1 percent, according to the figures.
