By Associated Press, 8/27/2004 02:58

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) A U.S. soldier was killed Friday in a vehicle accident near the volatile city of Fallujah, the military said.

The soldier's truck rolled off an embankment near Fallujah, 40 miles west of Baghdad, the military said in a statement.

A second soldier was seriously injured and evacuated to a U.S. medical facility in Germany, the statement said.

As of Thursday, 966 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq in March 2003, according to the Defense Department.
