Bush asking Congress for $2 billion in Hurricane Charley aid
Bush asking Congress for $2 billion in Hurricane Charley aid

MARK LONG, Associated Press Writer
Thursday, August 26, 2004

(08-26) 17:28 PDT MIAMI (AP) --

President Bush will ask Congress for $2 billion to help victims of Hurricane Charley, the administration said Thursday.

Bush will make the announcement Friday during a visit to Miami, a senior administration official said on condition of anonymity.

Bush will send Congress a $2 billion request for emergency supplemental appropriations, which will be used primarily for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The request also will include funds for the Small Business Administration and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Congress returns Sept. 7, and the amount of the request could change before then.

"The numbers are extremely fluid," the administration official said. "Between now and the time Congress gets back, some of these numbers will get more specific. Other numbers might not be known for several months."

1. I wonder if the GOP will accuse them of money grabbing?
Or do they not do that for swing states who have disasters happen, only solidly democratic states like NY.

Scumbags.

11. Looting some more money, huh? Bet this goes straight into his buddies
pockets like all the rest. If his idiot brother had reacted properly, we wouldn't need so much money.

12. yeah, $2billion should cover the cost of...
...a handful of wrecked trailer homes and a collapsed strip mall.

Or, you can view it as a $120 bribe per voting citizen (50% of state pop. 16.7 million).

15. yup...
Nothing like buying the voters...

Kerry should latch on to the fact that the people who lived in subsidized housing across the street from one of those trailer parks were fine through this. Those buildings sustained minimal damage.
What they need isn't money to replace their trailers. They need subsidies to help people on fixed incomes have homes they can rely on in a storm.

18. Have they confirmed a death toll yet?
The last I heard, there was no confirmed death toll and rumors of many more dead than Jeb had admitted to. Has this changed?
