Bush, Kerry Bow to McCain's Wishes on Ads
Presidential Elections - AP

NEW YORK - President Bush and Sen. John Kerry bowed to the wishes of popular maverick John McCain on Thursday, as the president embraced the Republican senator's legal fight against big-money special interest groups airing negative ads and the Democratic nominee scrapped a commercial that featured McCain. ..

Announcing that Kerry had yanked his ad, spokesman David Wade said, "It's long past time that Bush also take McCain's advice and do the right thing by putting an end to the smears and lies on John Kerry's service." ..

1. Ap headline writer lies again - Bush does not denounce Swiftie Ad
Granted McCain is saying the 527 blast is "going far enough" - but it is not a "bow" to McCain

Damn lying GOP biased AP.

10. and he won't
He got publicity he wanted as being the forceful leader for "plannng to file a lawsuit against the FEC

The White House said Bush made the commitment to McCain in a telephone call from Air Force One, hoping to head off a public confrontation with the Arizona Republican and Vietnam veteran when he campaigns with the president next week.

The Bush campaign said it would file the lawsuit in federal court to try to force the Federal Election Commission (news - web sites) to crack down on the ads. Campaign chairman Marc Racicot said "courts can move with extraordinary speed," but the case could still bog down and have little impact before the Nov. 2 election.

McCain has called on Bush to do more to end ads by a group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, which has accused Kerry, McCain's friend, of lying about his Vietnam War service.

McCain urged Bush to condemn the ads directly. Though Bush has refused to do so, McCain praised his decision to file suit and said he would work "with the president, both in the courts and through legislation, to force" the FEC to act.

Ok it is all fixed now--and McCain is happy with Bush for doing it. Nevermind it will never have any results until after the election. and that is how the game is played, apparently.

See, he is now on top of it all as the great forceful leader irate atit all. He and his minions know that nothing will come of it before the election, and Kerry was skunked.
Why did he fall for it? The ads will never be confronted by Bush and he will never request they stop . People will perceive and are perceiving this stubborness as a positive trait. His ruthlessnes will be admired and will give succor to those who are terrified and to those who will vote because they do not want to change horses in teh middle of the stream-- this is window dressing, and it is not surprising, is it?

18. See that is what I do not understand
Why was he obligated to pull the ad? Out of some sort of misplaced loyalty to the Republican? It was truth, not any form of misrepresentation of the truth., It was McCain's own words and if that was embarrassing well, this is the big time here that we find ourselves in. Our future and our children's future is at stake and is teetering on the brink of total fascism and totalitarianism.

14. Bow is the right word, and I'm disgusted
Kerry's McCain ad was just what needed to be said. The ad speaks to just how slimey bush truly is. It showed his total lack of respect for the military, that he so claims to "love".

I can't believe, nor understand why on earth Kerry is taking it off. Does this mean the Swift Boat Liars will disband? We wont hear from them ever again? I doubt it.

Bow to McCain?? What for? He backs this Grounded, AWOL, slug. He lets bush insult him, then use him.

This ad really showed what a bunch of hypocrites, republicans really are.

And what about Cleland? Bush & the republicans have completely dissed him. Bush refuses to even see him at his ranch. But Kerry should "bow" for McCain? How about Bush bowing to Cleland?

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, I've been be disappointed for a long time with how my party hasn't gotten the message across of how bush has abused and neglected NY. From unsafe air & water, to "Trifecta" jokes to being placed 49th on Homeland Security list for funds. Jeoporadizing the city further by having their convention here, too. Private funding is what reopened the Statue of Liberty, not bush or federal funds. You want to show what a hypocrite bush is? Look no further than NY. Media barely talks about that too.

Hope I haven't offended anyone, but I'm really upset tonite.

6. What a great headline!
Man, it almost sounds like Bush bowed to McCain's request for Bush to disavow the "dishonest and dishonorable" (McCain's words) Swift Boat Vets ad. But instead, it's just Bush using McCain to attack 527's.

9. Reuters version
- President Bush sought to smooth over differences with Sen. John McCain on Thursday by promising to take legal action to stop political ads by outside groups, including those attacking the war record of Bush's Democratic presidential rival, John Kerry.

The White House said Bush made the commitment to McCain in a telephone call from Air Force One, hoping to head off a public confrontation with the Arizona Republican and Vietnam veteran when he campaigns with the president next week.

The Bush campaign said it would file the lawsuit in federal court to try to force the Federal Election Commission to crack down on the ads. Campaign chairman Marc Racicot said "courts can move with extraordinary speed," but the case could still bog down and have little impact before the Nov. 2 election.

McCain urged Bush to condemn the ads directly. Though Bush has refused to do so, McCain praised his decision to file suit and said he would work "with the president, both in the courts and through legislation, to force" the FEC to act.

The Kerry campaign brushed aside the proposed lawsuit, and renewed its call on Bush to condemn the Swift Boat ads. "This White House is desperately trying to avoid coming clean about its role in smearing John Kerry's heroic war record," said the Massachusetts senator's campaign spokesman Phil Singer.

13. My email to fournier and the A.P...
Dear Mr. Fournier:

I don't know who writes the headlines on Yahoo News for your articles. But, the article of this piece is entirely misleading. No where in the article does it state that Bush will denounce the Swiftboat ads that McCain specifically asked him to denounce. What the article actually states is the in a weenie-like manner, McCain has gotten Bush to fight against ALL 527 ads, which means absolutely nothing. All bush has to do is to continue the same exact stance that he has maintained against all 527s. So, the headline of your article is totally misleading and you should request that it be corrected.

Thank you.

20. That's correct. I learned that in Journalism in college (1966)!
It didn't make sense then and it still doesn't. Does anyone know why the journalist doesn't write the headline?

23. He Didn't Wimp Out
From what I hear, Kerry and McCain have enormous personal respect for each other (even if their politics are often different.) If McCain had approached Kerry and politely asked him to remove the ad, it was the respectful thing for Kerry to do.

He is totally capitulating to Bush. And being very obvious about it. Why? What is he thinking?

It's a dark moment.

25. So Bush and McCain (REPUBLICANS) decide to stop Freedom of Speech
The 527 ads ARE an expression of Freedom of Speech for those of us who have contributed to groups running ads (MoveOn!!). It is one way we have of making our side heard, in a world where the ONLY media is nothing but a commercial for the republican neocons.

So...now McCain (who so many here on DU thought would make a jolly good VP candidate for Kerry -- slug brains!) joins with his bitch, bush, to try to go to court to take away EVEN MORE of our rights to free speech.

Sure, they might stop the Swift Boat Vets, but they also stop ME!!!! And the Swift Boat vets are going to continue to do what they do anyway....whether they're outlawed or not. They still speak through other organizations (remember the NRA?? How 'bout the churches?), so the only ones hurt are the grassroots activists who have joined together to make some advertisements.

Look, you guys: We've got a major battle ahead of us to try to turn this country around. We need to first get rid of these black boxes that are counting our votes. We've got to strangle the media by whatever means -- boycotts, protests, whatever -- to get a free press. Simultaneously with these battles, we've got to run for elective office for everything from dog catcher to U.S. Senate... judgeships and all. We need to become policemen/women, and military officers. Dems need to take back the country one person at a time.

Phuck McCain and bush....they keep trying to take our rights away. And Kerry agreed with them. What does that tell you?
