Exposed: Scandal of double voters (people illegally register in NYC/Fl.)
Some 46,000 New Yorkers are registered to vote in both the city and Florida, a shocking finding that exposes both states to potential abuses that could alter the outcome of elections, a Daily News investigation shows.

Registering in two places is illegal in both states, but the massive snowbird scandal goes undetected because election officials don't check rolls across state lines.

The finding is even more stunning given the pivotal role Florida played in the 2000 presidential election, when a margin there of 537 votes tipped a victory to George W. Bush.

Computer records analyzed by The News don't allow for an exact count of how many people vote in both places, because millions of names are regularly purged between elections.

But The News found that between 400 and 1,000 registered voters have voted twice in at least one election, a federal offense punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

1. Punish them ALL...regardless of party..In an election so close
as we had in 2000, those people could have tipped the balance...and probably DID.. We might have them to blame for all the horrific stuff we have endured for FOUR LONG YEARS :grr:..

This is what the newspapers should have done on day TWO of the "spoiled election"...It should have been pretty easy to cross check the names of people who requested absentee ballots and then see if they were both turned in, or any people who turned one in in either state could have been crosschecked with the sign in book..(which is being done away with, BTW)

2. This looks like an underhanded attack on Democrats by the NY Daily News
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 05:51 AM by Democat
They pick New York to "investigate" because they know that there are a lot more registered Democrats to try to cause controversy over.

Watch the Republicans use these stats to try to claim that Democrats are cheating. :(

4. It is to be expected from the NY Daily
Of the 46,000 registered in both states, 68% are Democrats, 12% are Republicans and 16% didn't claim a party.

Nearly 1,700 of those registered in both states requested that absentee ballots be mailed to their home in the other state, where they are also registered. But that doesn't raise red flags with officials in either place.

I'd like to see how they got their figures.

5. "shocking"
"massive scandal"

"stunning"

I think the Daily News is a decent newspaper, but this sensationalistic language makes it impossible for me to take this particular story seriously. Maybe I'll read when another paper picks it up and writes a normal story...
