Kerry Raises $2M for Democrats in N.Y.
EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. (AP)

John Kerry raised $2 million for Democrats in just a few hours Saturday, making two stops in this understated and elegant vacation destination for the Northeastern well-to-do.

The Democratic nominee picked up $1 million for the Democratic National Committee at each of two stops at private homes in the Hamptons and assured donors that he wouldn't let Republican critics go unanswered.

Jimmy Buffet entertained 750 guests who huddled under white tents to escape the rain at the first stop, home of venture capitalist Alan Patricof.

The crowd expressed its eagerness for Democrats to take on Republicans and the conservative critics who charge that Kerry may not deserve some of the medals awarded during the Vietnam War.

They chanted, "Fight Back!" as Teresa Heinz Kerry made remarks introducing her husband.

"We know that if we fight back, our base is very excited. But the votes we need to get are not the base," Heinz Kerry answered. "And the people beyond the base are shopping, and it seems they don't like negativity."

1. Awww, glad to see Jimmy is signing for Kerry
He came out for my man, Bob Graham, in the primary.

2. If what Teresa says is right about "negativety" then the shoppers
must really not like the bushco.

4. People behind the base don't like negativity? Republicans control all!
That quote from Teresa sounds condescending and more like something she should be saying off the record, not on the record.

Besides that, the reality is that the Republicans have been running negative campaigns for years and they now control every branch of government.

The idea that voters won't vote for someone attacking the other candidate has been proven wrong repeatedly.

5. Teresa Rocks!
I watched the townhall meeting in Canton Ohio with CNN tonight. The majority there supported an end to negative ads.

6. I agree
We should have a discussion with President Dukakis about how much voters like the guy who takes the high road ... oh, wait... Seriously, what a silly remark for Teresa to make in front of supporters. I hope she and the campaign (if she's representing the campaign's sentiments) are willing to change their minds about this. Otherwise, it's going to be a really rough ride to November, and an even rougher one with four more years of Bush.

7. Well, I agree about Teresa's remark, because
they'll take it out of context somehow and wave it around for years.

Welcome to DU!

8. please clarify
Sorry, I don't really understand what you mean. Take what out of context? Presumably, what Teresa said was a rebuke of the people who were chanting "fight back". Do you think Kerry shouldn't fight back against the Republican onslaught? P.S. Thanks for the welcome ... I've been lurking for a while, now.
