Iraq Pulls Off Another Soccer Stunner

By JOSEPH WHITE
The Associated Press
Saturday, August 21, 2004; 3:29 PM

IRAKLION, Greece - Emad Mohammed's 12-yard bicycle kick in the 64th minute gave Iraq a 1-0 victory over Australia in the men's soccer quarterfinals Saturday, putting the invaded, war-torn country in position to compete for only its second Olympic medal in the nation's history.

Iraq will face Paraguay or South Korea, who played later Saturday, in the semifinals in Thessaloniki on Tuesday.

1. Tinfoil hat time
Australia, huh. The coalition of the bribed, huh. Olympic athletes would never, ever, ever throw a match -- not even subconsciously -- over a misguided notion of patriotism and greater duty to one's country. I doubt that even very large sums of money could get an Australian soccer team to even think, just for a minute, about the possibility of letting the Iraqis win.

That would be contrary to the Olympic spirit.

3. What the hell are you talking about?
Australia doesn't receive aid from the USA...so Australia could hardly be bribed. The Australian government's decision to go to iraq was based of flawed ideology, not finances.

And I don't know why anyone's stunned by Australia losing a soccer match. We haven't even qualified for the World Cup since 1974 or thereabouts.

Sheesh!
