Ambassador Said Tayeb Jawed said Afghanistan (news - web sites) needs "robust and immediate support of the international community, especially the United States and NATO (news - web sites), to provide resources and troops to enhance security, before the election, during and after the election." He spoke during a briefing hosted by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
In late July, NATO ordered hundreds more peacekeepers to Afghanistan to help provide security during presidential elections, but the deployment still appeared to fall short of the 3,500 troops that were promised.
Jawed said several daunting challenges lie beyond the presidential elections that include holding parliamentary elections, which have been postponed until April; combatting terrorism and an insidious drug trade; training an army and police force; and building infrastructure to link the capital Kabul to outlying regions.
He listed a host of deeply rooted social ills that threaten the nascent democracy, including "warlordism, corruption, nepotism, rule of guns and abuse of power."
