New biography looks at Dick Cheney with a critical eye

If Cheney remains unscrutinized by a press corps that, as Nichols says, "willingly performs stenography to power," his book turns a searchlight on the votes, the statements and the other details that have largely been ignored.

In one chapter, Nichols counts 10 votes where Cheney opposes various measures to pressure South Africa to end its apartheid system, which long subjugated the country's black majority -including a vote against calling for the release of political prisoner Nelson Mandela, who would go on to become president.

Nichols writes: "It is not the practice of Nelson Mandela to speak ill of other prominent players on the world stage, but he will make an exception for Dick Cheney."
