Presidential hopeful Rev. Al Sharpton is being sued by a travel agency that claims he and his civil rights group owe more than $193,000 in airfare and hotel charges, according to documents made public on Wednesday.
Alpha International Travel, Inc., a Delaware-based agency, is suing Sharpton and his Harlem-based National Action Network alleging fraud and breach of contract, according to documents filed in New York Supreme Court in Manhattan.
The agency said Sharpton, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for the presidency, and the network used its services between May 2001 and August 2002 but did not pay, despite the agency's repeated demands.
The suit also claims Sharpton provided "fraudulent credit card information regarding American Express," but did not offer any details.
Sharpton's attorney, Sanford Rubenstein, says his client was outraged and has asked him to request a meeting with Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau "with a view toward filing a criminal complaint against Alpha ... for attempting to use Sharpton's credit card improperly."
