Sifting hope from the crisis, Corzine emerges
Sifting hope from the crisis, Corzine emerges
Sunday, August 15, 2004

Sen. Jon Corzine makes no secret of his desire to run for governor of New Jersey someday. And with Gov. James E. McGreevey no longer blocking his path, the question now is one of timing.

"Absolutely, he will run, without a doubt," says one top Democrat who spoke to Corzine recently.

But when? Corzine believes his best shot would come this November in a special election, according to a source familiar with his thinking.

Corzine in the last few days has been weighing the reasons to run now. He is frustrated by the seniority rules in the Senate that would force him to wait years before becoming chairman of a committee. The role of chief executive is more his style.

1. I hate losing Corzine in the senate...
but if we do have a special election, Corzine is much better than anything else NJ state Repugs could muster up. However who will take his Senate seat?

2. I find this hard to believe...
Knowing what I know from the inside of NJ Dem Politics. Well, Outside/Inside. Conventional wisdom is that the DNC would fight like the dickens to keep him in the US Senate, where he makes a difference and weilds a clear voice, minority or majority.

On the other hand, us poor, beat up NJ Dems would think we stepped in shit, upon arising from bed, the morning of the day he announces for Governor.

3. "stepped in shit"
I have been musing about that expression lately. You'd think it means something bad, but-- quite the contrary!

I wonder if this is a peculiarly New Jersey expression.

4. Nah.
I first heard it from the guys in the old proto-metal band, Blackfoot. They were Florida Crackers, through and through.
