State (California) loses 17,300 jobs -- experts are puzzled
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/08/14/MNG51886891.DTL

California lost 17,300 payroll jobs in July, the state Employment Development Department reported Friday, an unexpected drop that overshadowed a slight dip to 6.1 percent in the state's unemployment rate.

The report echoed recent weakness in national jobs figures and left regional economists disappointed and puzzled.

Joseph Hurd, an economist with UCLA's economic forecasting unit, cautioned against drawing too big an inference from the one-month job slump.

"The U.S. didn't have a good month, and we didn't have a good month, but this isn't enough for us to draw a conclusion that the (state) economy has turned back,'' Hurd said.

<snip>

Hurd said he thinks the 17,300-job dip in California may be a fluke caused by the way the state data are adjusted to reflect seasonal patterns, such as the traditional exodus of teacher jobs that occurs every summer.

Cut public spending and give the money to corporations who give it to their shareholders. There is no trickle down unless you're talking about neo-con bladder relief.

Like all the shareholders actually live in California. Most likely they live in the White House, the Naval Observatory, and Saudi Arabia.

2. Do you think this could have anything to do with
corporations running amok and sending thousands of jobs overseas? Or the fact that state government agencies are starved for cash because of Bush's economic policies? Oh, silly me-I forgot that the tax windfall for the rich has 'trickled down' to the peons. Must be the alignment of the stars, then. </sarcasm>

9. It also has to do with the fact that jobless people can't afford to stay
... in California. When the available jobs go down, people leave (or don't cross the border). Furthermore, when people go from 'non-farm' payrolls to picking fruit, it's shown as a reduction in the (non-farm) workforce. Let's try to remember that the monthly (CPS) employment/unemployment figures that're cited are always in the 'Non-farm' sector. In areas like California and Texas and Floriduh, people actually go from one to the other. (D'uh!) Let's try to remember that one of the reasons high-tech gained a foothold in Silicon Vally is because people who pick fruit (Santa Clara County is historically orchards) are regarded as having the manual dexterity for the kinds of fabrication and assembly jobs that characterize 'high-tech'. (A cheap, trainable labor force is very attractive.)

3. I'm sure Ahhnold can come up with some catchy line from one of his movies
and make this problem go away.

Geez, that's all he campaigned on.

Does any of this bad economic news from California really surprise anyone?

And Bush wants Ahhnold to campaign for him? BRING IT ON!!!

13. The Corporatist jingle writers state...................
"Joseph Hurd, an economist with UCLA's economic forecasting unit, cautioned against drawing too big an inference from the one-month job slump"

So should we put it in other units of measure, say like several months or years? Maybe if the correct questions were being asked instead of points of contentions that they would like others to look at things would be different. I don't except their pre-fabricated talking points

http://statehealthfacts.kff.org/cgi-bin/healthfacts.cgi?action=compare&category=Demographics+and+the+Economy&subcategory=People+in+Poverty&topic=Poverty+Rate+by+Race%2fEthnicity

Looking at just these stats, it would be no wonder how things are going

If this happened under Gray Davis, they would already be starting the recall!

Helping you by keeping things simple...

You can find dozens of websites on every possible topic about living and working abroad.

So how do you make sense of it all? I'll help you.

As the editor of two completely free newsletters, Overseas Digest and Overseas Teacher's Digest, I spend hours crawling around the web looking for useful news, information and tools for people who want to live and work abroad.

I can probably save you a lot of time and effort by directing you to resources that you might otherwise miss. I'll also help you simplify your search efforts.

21. California needs to extend "unemployment benefits" for people
who have exhausted their benefits; I've only got about $2,100 left on mine.

Extending benefits would bring immediate and prompt spending that would help the economy.
