By DAVID ROYSE, Associated Press Writer

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The prospect that a tropical storm and a hurricane — or possibly two hurricanes — could strike Florida on the same day is something meteorologists say they have never seen.

"It's almost unheard of," state meteorologist Ben Nelson said.

Disaster officials are keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Bonnie as it spins toward the Florida Panhandle, bringing heavy rains that could cause flooding. The other eye is trained on Hurricane Charley, aimed at the Florida Keys at the opposite end of the state.

Bonnie was expected to come ashore southwest of Tallahassee Thursday morning, with Charley hitting the Keys late Thursday or Friday morning. Charley also could hit the mainland later Friday.

There is a rare phenomenon called the Fujiwara effect, where two storms can essentially collide and spin around each other, but meteorologists said that's not likely to happen with Bonnie and Charley.

Florida emergency officials have faced large storms and wildfires in the past, but officials say the storm systems will test their skills, making it difficult to track both.

1. Well since northern Florida is heavily Republican
I can pretty much guess which one they will track.

4. I'm sure other posters have mentioned this
but I keep thinking about all those National Guard men and women and the reserves over in Iraq. Everytime there is a disaster like this ( if it indeed becomes a disaster) we always see the Guard and reserves acting as emergency workers. I wonder how many are available for this kind of work.

5. Good point.
A point which I've rarely heard the republinazi news bring up. Blame GW Hoover if a natural disaster happens & there's not enough Nat'l. Guard troops to help.

6. Kind of ironic, I think.
Our forefathers had in mind for us to only have soldiers to protect the homeland, not to fight in foreign wars. Here we have what is supposed to be, according to this administration, one of the most dangerous times in our history here at home and all of our soldiers are over seas. The dumba@@ has left the homeland unprotected while telling us we're in constant danger! I wonder what Jefferson would think...

7. Jefferson
being the open-minded man of the Enlightenment would be horrified. Not only with our foreign policy, but with the backward track our nation has taken with regards to scientific thought. Our culture is swamped with magical thinking on both ends of the political spectrum.

8. I'm looking forward to seeing the GOP get blamed when ....
this hits and the disaster help doesn't come or is slow in getting to Florida. These storms and any that follow may be the straw that breaks the GOP's back in the south.

9. Oh great, I'm in the strike zone for both storms
Looks like it going to be a very wet weekend, and I've got a trade show to go to this weekend over in Daytona. Oh well.
