Concerns with Patriot Act mount
Concerns with Patriot Act mount

330 communities, four states worry federal law gives too much power

TUMWATER, Wash. — After saluting the flag and purring about a potluck invitation from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the City Council of this town of 13,000 got down to the business of the night: a public hearing on whether to oppose the USA Patriot Act.

<snip>

In the end, the concerns about the Patriot Act — real or phantom — were enough to compel the Tumwater City Council on July 20 to join more than 330 communities and four states that have condemned or expressed worry about the act. The resolution called on city employees in this town near Olympia not to follow provisions of the law that violate the Constitution — though leaving it vague how they would interpret this.

2. Amazing that 330 communities would condemn or express worry about
the Patriot Act, but has even one Rethug in Congress, other than maybe Ron Paul who I suspect has concerns, condemned or expressed worry? Of course the Rethugs know the most onerous provisions of the Act will not be used against their own, that the enemy within are those who would have the temerity to ever question them in any manner.

3. If they think Patriot Act I is bad, take a gander at PA II
I'm just reading Mark Crispin Miller's book "Cruel and Unusual: Bush/Cheney's New World Order", which details what's in store if Patriot II should pass. One conclusion he draws: "Under PA II, the U.S. federal government, as well as certain areas of the state governments, would fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of a directorate of giant agencies... what would in essence be a theocratic/military takeover of the government, both national and local."

There's much, much more. I recommend this book--it's most enlightening and scary beyond imagination. Hope Tumwater and the other municipalities stand firm in their opposition. Better yet, I hope evil does not prevail in the election and we can all be truly safe once more.

Bush MUST GO!!

that over 10 cities and even the county itself have declared themselves "Patriot Act Free-zones"....Don't have the exact details, but I'm proud to live in an area where people will stand up to it....

7. I envy places like that - they've got a grip...
meanwhile, I feel I'm stuck in Stepford (a freepertown subsidiary). A nieghbor once complained that the cure for the sad state of the local roads would be to sell off the open space to developers (for more houses with more drivers!) for the money to fix the potholes. Their logic eludes me.

9. Not surprising
It's not surprising it's in Washington since the Patriot act is now being used to go after people who were running Marijuana for funds seasure, the DA stating that just because it was meant for terrorism doesn't mean the laws weren't meant to be used to thier fullest affect.

The plight of a bunch of potheads may not mean much to the average person, yet the fact that this is being done suggests that the abuses have only begun.
