Hiring Dip Makes Bush Campaign Job Harder | LA Times
Hiring Dip Makes Bush Campaign Job Harder

August 7, 2004
By Peter Wallsten and Warren Vieth, Times Staff Writers

WASHINGTON — As he campaigns these days, President Bush asserts that the nation's economy has "turned the corner." But Friday's disappointing employment report — all but assuring that his record on election day will show a net loss of jobs during his time in office — is likely to make Bush's sales pitch all the more difficult.

The weak jobs numbers present a challenge to his claim that his "well-timed" tax cuts have fostered a steady recovery, several political analysts and economists said. Some economists had expected a gain of as many as 250,000 jobs for July, but the Labor Department said the economy created only 32,000.

While employers have added 1.2 million payroll jobs this year, they have shed a net 1.1 million jobs since Bush became president in January 2001.

2. I don't understand that "turned the corner" thing either
Is Rove really THAT dumb not to have seen the Hoover parallels? I mean Christ, that was a Democrat talking point within 6 minutes, yet Bush keeps on repeating it....

"We've turned a corner..."

"We've turned the corner...."

"We've turned a corner..."

"We've turned the corner...."

"We've turned a corner..."

"We've turned the corner...."

"We've turned a corner..."

"We've turned the corner...."

6. Bush and his limited intelligence sees a catchy phrase
and they run and run and run with it, not realizing how it contradicts the reality of the world.

3. The biggest mistake the GOP made
was "hiring" this dip in the first place to run for president.

4. It did turn the corner. Then it turned the corner again.
Tax cuts for the rich. Good idea, Junior. They took that money and used it to create jobs in India an China.

5. The Bush campaign's job will be harder IF and only if
The media whores remember that Stupidhead is the first president since Herbert Hoover to see a net loss of jobs during his term. Unfortunately for us who oppose Stupidhead, the media whores just sit and nod every time a Bush mouthpiece says "booming economy" or "miracle recovery." None of them ever mentions it for fear of not getting invited to the nice parties this weekend. Or maybe they're afraid of looking gauche or something.

Then they head out of the studio, pick up their twenty off the dresser, and make their way over to the nice parties. Ahhhh, life is good for the media whores.

7. So you're saying IF and only if some semblance of truth becomes
required for anything these idiots in the media pass of as "news"?

10. Misleading fact in the article
While employers have added 1.2 million payroll jobs this year,

Yes, 1.2 million jobs have been added this year, but that's ALL of the jobs added since the recovery began in November 2001. So, that's 1.2 million jobs over THREE years. Also, a strong growth economy creates 1.2 million job every 3 months. So, we should have had at least 2 million jobs created this year alone.

13. I forget, how many per month were needed to be gained
to match the "expectations" sold by bushco when they passed the last tax cut last year?

14. 10 million fewer people employed than average.
132,507,000 people were employed in March 2001. 131,272,000 people were employed in July 2004. That's 1,235,000 fewer people employed ... but on a "seasonally adjusted" basis.

In real (un"adjusted") terms, in the private sector only ...
Between Dec 2000 and Aug 2003, the number of jobs decreased by 2.7% (3,028,000 people)
Between Aug 2003 and Jul 2004, the number of jobs increased by 1.4% (1,574,000 people)
Between Dec 2000 and Jul 2004, the number of jobs decreased by 1.3% (1,454,000 people)

In an even more 'real' sense, employment should have been increasing at least at a 2.1% annual rate just to keep up with the average rate of increase for the past 50 (or 30) years.

The Busholini Cabal is ten million jobs behind the 'curve'.

19. 1.2 mil. jobs added
I thought I read that the 1.2 mil. jobs added figure is a guesstimate that jobs were added, but no actual proof (that these jobs exist) for most of them. It would help explain why the unemployed can't find work.

12. That's right, the dip's going to lose, thanks to the dips
in the economy, in the polls, in the BFEE's credibility. The only number growing is Iraq troop deaths/injuries. MKJ

20. I could have told them not to hire that dip

but they never listen.

32,000 jobs is nothing in the face of the unemployment in this country. Too many people have been out of work for years and too many of the employed are underemployed as well.
