Debt, tax questions surface for Keyes
Chicago Tribune staff reporters

Old campaign debts and a tax lien may be the first bumps in the campaign trail for Alan Keyes, the Maryland conservative expected to accept the Illinois GOP nomination for U.S. Senate on Sunday.

Keyes, who ran for president in 1996 and 2002, owes $524,000 for his failed presidential bids, according to Federal Election Commission documents. Debts for 1988 and 1992 U.S. Senate races in Maryland have been settled.

And tax records indicate the State of Maryland in 2001 filed a tax lien on the home owned by Keyes, 54, and his wife, Jocelyn, because of $7,481 in unpaid state income taxes and penalties. ..

Douglas Webber of the Center for Responsive Politics in Washington, D.C., said it is not unusual for candidates to allow debt to accrue for years in losing campaigns.

1. I wish I lived in Illinois,
so I could be part of the biggest Senate landslide in history.

Keyes, and the Illinois GOP will self destruct on this one. The other contestable Senate races will probably gain from the momentum.

How does the phrase Majority Leader Daschle sound?

2. Ah watch out.
now that his past is being drudged up, so to speak, let us see if he actually goes forward on Sunday, or sez, no thanks.

it ain't over til its over. and Illinois is the MOAFEs (mother of all fraudulent elections).

With two former govs, including an author of the 9/11 report, saying that they CANNOT support Keyes, he may have second thoughts.

9. Will the Repukes
finally just cave in when Keyes quits and just hand the Senate seat to Barak Obama on a silver platter?

The Repukes are running out of prospective candidates and running out of time.

7. The phrase "Majority Leader Daschle"
sounds no better than "Minority Leader Daschle".

Daschle is a spineless wimp.

When we gain the majority in the Senate we need a new party leader.

5. There are some quotes
from Alan Keyes criticizing Hillary Clinton for being a "carpet bagger" in her race in N.Y.

Those should be interesting remarks, now that Keyes has to register to vote for the first time in Illinois.

10. yeah, too bad
it may destroy his entire political "career". I like having hate-spewing wackos like Keyes, David Duke and Pat Buchanan openly declaring they are Republicans and getting their views on the record.

11. Maybe Keyes has to get out of Maryland.
I'm sitting here wondering if maybe Keyes is running in Illinois simply because he can't AFFORD to stay in Maryland any more...

I just love to watch the IL GOP go into meltdown. The best they could come up with was a carpetbagger that was run out of his home state??

Bwa-haaaa!
