California campaign speeds up as major candidates speak

SACRAMENTO (AP) — Gov. Gray Davis plans to "set the record straight" Tuesday in his first major address on the recall election aimed at removing him from office.
"He will speak candidly and from the heart. He will take responsibility, set the record straight and explain his upcoming plans," said Gabriel Sanchez, spokesman for Californian Against the Costly Recall.

The address by Davis at UCLA later Tuesday will be among several appearances this week as major candidates finally begin to address the critical issues facing the state. Also on Tuesday, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante planned to propose "tough love" — including tax increases — for Californians.

And actor Arnold Schwarzenegger promised a discussion of economics on Wednesday.

In coming weeks, Davis will travel the state to make his case directly to voters, said Peter Ragone, communications director for the organization. (snip/...)
