John Ashcroft To Visit Philadelphia
John Ashcroft To Visit Philadelphia

Will Address Audience At National Constitution Center

Aug 19, 2003 11:56 am US/Eastern
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Attorney General John Ashcroft will visit states key to President Bush's re-election chances to defend the government's use of the anti-terrorism USA Patriot Act, which is drawing increased criticism as a threat to civil liberties.

After an opening speech Tuesday at a conservative Washington think tank, Ashcroft will embark on a campaign-style road trip, delivering remarks Wednesday and Thursday to law enforcement audiences in Philadelphia, Cleveland, Detroit and Des Moines, Iowa.

Among the dozen or so future stops are Salt Lake City and Boston, officials said Monday. The Justice Department is putting up an Internet site on Tuesday to reinforce the pro-Patriot Act message and all 94 U.S. attorneys are being encouraged to hold town hall-style meetings to stress the law's benefits in fighting terrorism. (snip) White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the sales pitch is needed to combat what he called "a small minority that has spread misinformation about these provisions. It's important to talk about the successes we're achieving, to educate the American people and to set the record straight." (snip/...)

6. Reuter's broader version...
...of Ashkkkroft's "Patriot" Act tour:

Attorney General to Defend Anti-Terrorism Law

By James Vicini

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft (news - web sites) on Tuesday begins a nationwide campaign to defend the anti-terrorism law adopted after the 9/11 attacks that faces criticism from civil libertarians and others for giving the government broad powers to eavesdrop and detain immigrants.

Justice Department (news - web sites) officials said Ashcroft was kicking off the month-long effort with a speech to a conservative think tank in Washington. He will be traveling to more than a dozen cities to try to drum up support for the USA Patriot Act.

The law, adopted less than six weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, hijacked plane attacks, enhanced the government's ability to tap phones, share intelligence information, track Internet usage and cell phones and protect U.S. borders.

The American Civil Liberties Union (news - web sites) has spearheaded opposition to the law and questioned whether Ashcroft's tour was politically motivated. And legislation is pending in the U.S. Congress that would roll back a key provision of the law allowing the government to conduct "sneak and peek" searches of private property.

9. and he's going to do this where?
In the Birthplace of American Democracy? If that isn't the ultimate insult to every American who still gives a shit, I don't know what is. It's like spray-painting graffiti on the Statue of Liberty, or dancing a jig on JFK's grave.

I hope there's an extra-angry mob in Philly waiting for this asshole.

Excuse my profanity - the idea of Ashcroft going to Philadelphia to destroy democracy really pisses me off.

7. The CONSTITUTION center
This is a brand new museum in Philly. It is dedicated to exploring the Constitution. What the hell could possibly interest Asskraft in speaking there. He took an Oath, that he has trashed, to support it.
What is in a mind like that???

11. It's classic
The criminal returning to the scene of the crime.

I just wonder why he's making a "campaign-style" stop in Philadelphia? He was appointed, not elected, and the last time he ran for office, voters preferred a dead guy to his sanctimonious ass.

Gist of it: "God annointed me to protect your Liberty by taking it away!" The fact he starts off with a RELIGIOUS speech in front of AEI true believers tells you he doesn't give a shit about you and me. Asscrack is total evil!
