Hunting the Viarsa (vessel) - dramatic international hunt

South Africa joined a dramatic international hunt for an Uruguayan fishing vessel yesterday which is believed to have illegally poached millions of pounds worth of rare Patagonian toothfish in Australian waters.

The Viarsa, which has ignored repeated radio orders, has been hunted for more than 1 000 nautical miles, mostly through snowstorms and strong gales, by the Australian customs ship Southern Supporter.

It is one of the most dangerous and tenacious maritime pursuits for years.

unfortunately, the Toothfish industry is plagued by crooks like these. put it this way, more toothfish is imported into the US alone every year than is legally caught. you do the math.

this really should be in Environment/Energy, I think.

This seems like a cool story and happening this second. It's the first report I've seen about it. Wonder if the ship has something else like explosives or drugs as cargo? Maybe killing off he last of a species...
