D.C. Police to Block Capitol Traffic Flow
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040803/ap_on_re_us/terror_threat_capitol

WASHINGTON - Police announced plans to block all traffic flow around the Capitol, and to search some of the vehicles, to ensure that explosives do not get near the building.

The crackdown, announced late Monday, was to begin at 4 a.m. Tuesday.

Capitol Police Chief Terrance Gainer said his officers will block portions of Independence and Constitution avenues — major traffic arteries that run on either side of the Capitol grounds — in the operation.

Cars, trucks or drivers who raise police suspicions in visual inspections will be subjected to more intrusive examination, which will cause traffic tie-ups for that portion of the nation's capital, Gainer said. Police also plan to block off one street, which goes between two Senate office buildings, which already has been done to streets between House office buildings.

2. Talk about irony..
You can get pulled over and "intrusively examined" for "raising police suspicions" while driving down Constitution Avenue? :eyes:

3. Went to DC a couple of weeks ago. National disgrace.
There were link-fence barriers everywhere which seemed to serve no purpose. Perhaps Haliburton had the contract. Went on the "Congress tour". We were told it was an hour tour. Half of that was being passed from security staging area to staging area. The only part of the building we saw was the Rotunda, the "Statue room" and the "Crypt". There were many overseas visitors there. I can only say as an American I was totally embarrassed.

4. the neocon police state tightens its grip....
I'll bet a four block area around the Capital will be walled within five years. A Green Zone smack dab in the middle of Washington, D.C.

6. Maybe sooner?
They've gotta keep the people who will be knocking down their doors to usher them out of office come November 2 when they won't give up without a fight!

One new block per month until November?

7. Even terrorist trees have to be chopped down
From the article: The Cameron Elm, 125 to 150 years old, was felled because tree specialists had determined that a hollow area inside the trunk threatened to bring the tree down on members of Congress or visitors who pass every day....
