Try to get that close to a Bush event. Good luck.

Kerry makes swing into Michigan

Thousands wait to hear Democrat nominee tout his plan for jobs in Taylor appearance

By George Hunter / The Detroit News

TAYLOR — John Kerry speared a line drive, hit a single and scored with several thousand people who crammed into Heritage Park on Sunday evening for a picnic, politics and softball.

“This is about putting Americans back to work at jobs that pay more than jobs overseas,” Kerry told the largely blue-collar, UAW crowd.

It was the message that they waited — and waited — to hear. Parking spaces at Heritage’s lots were gone hours before Kerry’s “Believe in America” bus convoy arrived around 9 p.m. People who couldn’t drive into the park parked a mile away and hiked back.

Not everyone was there to cheer his presidential candidacy, however; about 40 of the president’s supporters hoisted pro-Bush signs at the park’s entrance. President Bush gets his next turn in Michigan on Thursday, when he’s scheduled to campaign in Saginaw.

1. Will Bush allow protestors near him?
I don't think so. He'll probably speak to an invitation-only crowd.

I think that Kerry doing sports is great. I want to see Edwards doing the same thing. The Bush crowd calls Edwards pretty and the Breck girl. Maybe Kerry/Edwards should challenge Bush/Cheney to a softball game.

3. Kerry should bring up the whole "free speech zone" issue
Just one of the many developments on Bush's watch that ought to creep any citizen out, but people just seem to accept as part of Bush's Glorious War On Terror.

It would be cool if Kerry went on record as saying "When I'm president, there will be no free-speech zones, America is a free-speech zone!"

4. Yes! He should point out the protestors and say
"Unlike Bush, I don't require people to sign a pledge of support to attend my campaign events."

8. Not only invitation only but must sign a pledge to support Bush*
Desperation is the rule now for them.

2. Taylor and the downriver Detroit 'burbs are softball country ...
... and prototypical 'NASCAR Dads' stomping grounds. It's also both union and union-reactionary (i.e. "free ride" folks who tend to vote Busholini). Since about 30-40 years ago, softball leagues are big in this area - once an annual stop for "The King and His Court." If Kerry can pitch a softball rising slider, he'll gain at least 1-2% more support. It's hard to describe the degree to which softball pervaded this area 30 years ago (I lived there for several months) - when you could find a league game almost any night of the week in the summer with at least 200-300 people in attendance.
