WP: For Right, a Wrong Direction – Many in Calif. Wary Of Schwarzenegger
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 18 -- California conservatives are in a quandary. Although the front-running, media-grabbing, superstar candidate for governor is a Republican, he is not their kind.

(snip)

So what if Arnold Schwarzenegger displays a bust of former president Ronald Reagan in his office? To conservatives, he is no Ronald Reagan. Rush Limbaugh, a Reagan fan, has been sounding the alarm on his radio talk show about Schwarzenegger's moderate views since the actor announced his intention to challenge Gov. Gray Davis (D) in the Oct. 7 recall election. "Arnold Schwarzenegger," Limbaugh said the other day, "is no conservative. Period."

(snip)

"So far, it's been a disappointing two weeks," said Rich Lowry, editor of the conservative National Review. Last week, the magazine editorialized that Schwarzenegger had not earned conservative support, and Lowry said nothing has changed.

(snip)

The National Review could tell its California readers not to vote for Schwarzenegger should the actor not show leadership and a strong Republican vision for the state, Lowry said. Even if it means costing the party the election, "it doesn't do the Republican Party any good to have someone who's not willing to offer an alternative to what's already in place," he said.

1. Shows how little the regime really thinks of the voters of CA
or any state

Did they really think a big name actor (really a has been) could waltz his way into the theft of a major US political office on his tainted smile and name recognition?

They give the voters of CA credit for being brain-dead sheep. And the voters, even conservatives, appear to be saying fugwb.

2. What if Maria got to him? Think about this...
What if she convinced him to run b/c he would split the Rebublican vote at worst, or at best, win? He's got Rob Lowe and Warren Buffett working for him - both avowed Democrats. Wouldn't that just be genius? I think the guy has a genuine concern, even though he's probably out of touch with most of reality for your average citizen.

4. True for those I know, too, dArKeR. . .
All are voting against the recall. None of us are very enamored with Davis, but we dislike this perversion of our democracy even more. And this cuts across the spectrum. I had dinner with three fairly conservative people the other evening. All three oppose the recall. None of them knew if Schwarznegger would be a good governor or not, but all agreed if he wants the job, he needs to work for it in a general election, same as everyone else should.

5. Over the years
it's been obvious that we've been able to pick the most qualified candidate offered to us. Be it Gov. Moonbeam, Jerry Brown, George Deukmajian, Pete Wilson or Gray Davis. Give us some credit for thinking outside the box!
