When Best Laid Plans Are Bested (*'s vacation ruined)
By ELISABETH BUMILLER

CRAWFORD, Tex.

When President Bush returns to Washington from his Texas ranch at the end of the month, he will need a vacation from his vacation. True, he has spent time relaxing in the Sisyphean struggle of clearing cedar and brush from his 1,600 acres of prairie. But events of the past week, from the blackout to Arnold Schwarzenegger's entry into the California governor's recall race, ruined the most meticulous of White House plans.

Mr. Bush loves order, but disorder was what he got. Perhaps he should have been expecting it. After all, strange things happen in August, like Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 or the coup that began against President Mikhail S. Gorbachev of the Soviet Union in 1991. Last August, Mr. Bush fended off questions about whether he would authorize an attack on Saddam Hussein after Brent Scowcroft, the first President Bush's national security adviser, warned of the consequences.

(snip)

"It is the biggest political story in the country?" the president retorted, irritated. "That's interesting. That says a lot. That speaks volumes."

"You don't agree?" the reporter said.

"I don't get to decide the biggest political story," Mr. Bush said, grumpily. "You decide the biggest political story. But I find it interesting that that is the biggest political story in the country, as you just said."

Another reporter jumped in, "You don't think it should be?"

The president replied: "Oh, I think there's maybe other political stories. Isn't there, like, a presidential race coming up?"

5. If Dubya loses in '04, the pig farm will be for sale November 3!
That property only serves as a prop. Sure, many Americans think Dubya grew up on "the ranch," branding cattle with a big ole "W" and bust'n broncs, but the little man has absolutely no connection to anything rural, much less an old pig farm outside of Waco, TX.

3. OH MY GOD!
Is Bush not the most ill-tempered little spoiled brat you've ever seen? Little Mr. Bunnypants was "grumpy" because he wasn't the center of attention any more. Wah wah wah! Yeah, like the presidential race, OVER A YEAR FROM NOW, is bigger news than Arnie this week. Oh good grief! Listen, Shrub, I've go some advice for you:

-- Go away
-- Give the country back to the adults
-- GROW UP!

4. Is it just me, or did the writer of this article seem like she was
just a little bit sarcastic (just a little)?

snip:

" Mr. Bush will be under pressure to visit one of the blackout states, or at least speak up, on another fun day of his summer vacation."

6. Does anyone here know about the Press Passes with Top Dumb Photo
I saw it at the tail end of Meet the Press while surfing DU. They had story of the AWOL doll and showed a press pass with AWOL in the flight suit photo.

Thought I saw a mention on DU, but now can't remember where and having no luck with a search.

Anyone know of this story. What hubris by these jerks.

13. I barely caught that too
something about how the press corps was issued press badges with a stupid picture of bush in his flight suit. We should get a list of all the members of the press corps and foward them stories on bush going AWOL...just in case they forget when looking at the GI Chimp on their badge.

7. What made him so crabby?
It wasn't like he was heating up soup on a fuckin barbecue to feed his family during a blackout or anything.

I wonder if Pickles will be boiling water for the clan to prevent Giardia?

Must be tough bein' on vacation while we all sweltered in the dark.

14. IF the prez was anyone halfway competent, I'd be ticked off...
...that the POTUS is taking a month-long vacation to clear brush on 1600 acres of Texas wastelands. Surely one can hire some of the local migrant worker population to do the job for a fraction of the paycheck bush* receives to wield the weedwacker.

However, being the barely-functioning moron that he is, I'm quite gratified to see him doing manual labor. It keeps him from making any policy decisions. And as for the 2005 presidential race...

Oh, please, cover it. I can't wait to see the Democrats clear some shrub out of the Whitehouse.
