En Guardian! The launch of the U.S. edition of ... The Guardian
http://nymetro.com/nymetro/news/media/columns/medialife/n_8938/

... Still, when, during a coffee break, Alan Rusbridger, the Guardian’s editor, said to me, in a most offhanded way, “We’re coming to America,” I assumed he was talking about a personal visit.

“Well, let’s definitely get together,” I politely said.

“No,” he said. “We’re bringing the Guardian to America. We’re going to publish an American version.”

... Then, during the next break in the conference, Rusbridger took me across the street to his office and showed me the prototype for the new American Guardian. Its tentative form is as a weekly magazine, quite unlike any other weekly magazine that has been started in the U.S. in the past generation. Not only is it about politics (Rusbridger is looking to launch in the winter to cover the presidential-primary season), but the magazine—meant to be 60 percent derived from the Guardian itself, with the rest to come from American contributors—has a great deal of text unbroken by design elements.

3. Yay!
The only thing that would be better would be if this were a free weekly, distributed in streetcorner boxes all over the U.S.

24. ...to which I can only say,
So buy a few copies & hand them out on the street corner. Leave 'em lying around in the laundromat. Put them in your favorite coffeshop.

6. Hope they don't end up becoming diluted and compromise the
standard we have come to expect of the Guardian. Anyway I will be glad to have the Guardian join the fray in the US.

10. I don't think that's going to happen
The article mentions that the Guardian is funded by a trust, so there's no need for commercial success or pandering to advertisers. It takes away the desire for compromise. Much like "Harper's" magazine here in the US.

7. Excellent news
I wonder if this will challenge our media to actually report some newsrather than Rovian sound bytes? It is sad how often Americans have to turn to overseas media such as the Guardian to know what is going on in our own country.

8. Never fear...
...The big media congloms will find some way to pressure their Congresscritters into passing laws that forbid rogue nations (like the U.K.) from starting newspapers on Murkan soil. :eyes:

11. Wouldn't surprise me if they tried that, but...

17. there used to be a "Guardian"
There used to be a "Guardian", a national leftist newspaper, in the US. I can't remember if it was connected with the UK Guardian or not. It disappeared in the early nineties, but it was wonderful. We used to leave copies of it all over the place.

Surely someone remembers this newspaper.

19. The Guardian Weekly is available now.
Edited on Mon Jul-07-03 12:35 PM by caledoni
You can subscribe to the Guardian Weekly now. Unless there's an international news stand in your vicinity. Before the internet, I used to buy it. Though biweekly and nursing it for a couple weeks due to struggling finances at the time. Now I read it online.

Typo editied.

20. Weekly Guardian is excellent
You can get it delivered by mail or ask for it to be ordered at a news stand. Has the best of the Guardian plus stuff from the Washington post and Le Monde. Go to the Guardian site to arrange weekly delivery.

28. Great news!
It is so hard to get good (non-Internet) news here in the States without paying huge mailing fees. I'll certainly be subscribing, and it sounds like winter release date makes it a perfect candidate for holiday gift subscriptions. :)

Now if only we could convince the Independent to do the same...
