ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell telephoned Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to express his "regret" at the killing of two Pakistani soldiers by U.S. troops this week, Pakistan's foreign ministry said on Saturday.

It said Powell called Musharraf on Friday night to express his regrets and to assure Pakistan that Washington viewed it as a key ally in the war on terror.

"Mr Colin Powell informed the president that an inquiry was being conducted to ascertain all details of the incident," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"He (Powell) said that the U.S. attached great importance to its relations with Pakistan, its important ally in the global fight against terrorism," it added.
