Local Republicans write Bush urging new Cuba policy
BY OSCAR CORRAL
ocorral@herald.com

Dozens of local Republican-elected leaders have signed their names to a letter to President Bush urging him to make changes to Cuba policy, a week after a group of state representatives sent the White House a similar note.

The letter echoes the message some Cuban-American leaders have delivered recently to Bush: Get tougher on Castro or risk losing Cuban-American support in the 2004 election.

''We must not ignore the potential for significant erosion in the loyalty of our constituency, which is frustrated by the unfulfilled promise made by every candidate for president over the last 40 years: a free Cuba,'' the letter says. (snip)

(snip) The letter asks the president to authorize improvements in Radio and TV Martí; implement Title III of the Helms-Burton Act; abolish the wet foot/dry foot immigration policy that repatriates most Cubans picked up at sea; and stop the sale of food to Cuba by U.S. farmers. (snip/...)

Note: These demands are regressive and attempt to void the progress made by bipartisan effort in the House and Senate, and thousands of American citizens across the country, representing both conservative and progressive points of view.

Sooner or later, some candidate's going to need to tell these terrorists to put a sock in it.

Let them go home and talk tough to the REAL Cuban people who threw their bleeps out! We should NOT allow our foreign policy to be dictated by these little violent brats in Miami.

1. Insufferable politics
These demands are a window on a history of 43 years of demands - a perfect example of how we have been held hostage after all these decades.

Just ask one of these Cuban Americans (some of who are Batistas) how they should continue to be treated like kings and queens and have laws, policies, and money that other immigrant groups could only dream of? Ask any of them why demand to be given continued favoritism? Ask them why they have sent billions of money to their relatives which can only help Castro?

Their predicament occurred 43 years ago and continued in a certain form after the Berlin Wall CAME DOWN.

They don't know that the Berline Wall CAME DOWN. They consider themselves the poor, grieving victims of communism. Their children and granchildren would probably want to move on.

Their war is against one man.

How is it that they don't want American companies to do business, but Canada, Mexico, and all other countries around the world tell the U.S. to shut up when we start telling them not to do business - a favor to Cuban Americans? How is it that they, Cuban Americans, probably have some among them that do business with China and other countries who have a government similar to Cuba. Ask them why they have sent billions of money to their relatives which can only help Castro?

It is time to grow up and become adults and attempt some rationality.

But watch, our politicians on both sides will probablly take their orders from Cuban-Americans once again. For 43 more years?

3. Its all about money
Its all about campaign finance money for pandering politicians. Money looped thru the various Miamicuban "exile" foundations + Radio & TV Marti on one side, and the politicians pandering for campaign dollars from the various corporate AG farms like ADM and Cargill.

NONE of these politicians would benefit from a lifting of the embargo and ending trade sanctions against Cuba because that would mean the loss of a profitable campaign money raising platform - on both sides.

The fastest way to end this ridiculous undemocratic cycle is for Americans of all political ilk to demand the end of the trade and travel sanctions against Cuba, Cubans, and Americans.

2. The "liberation" of Cuba has been reserved for
the first term of President Jeb Bush. :puke:

5. The Bush Criminal Empire and the Miami Cubans have always been partners
Back to the late 50's. Poppy was the CIA agent assigned to keep them stirred up, a job which he later transferred to his son Jeb, which made it neccessary for him to be a Florida resident.

They were the BCE's partners in the Bay of Pigs (failure) as well as the "successful" operations in Dallas 1963, Watergate hotel 1972, and the destruction of American democracy 2000.

Yet they can't seem to overthrow one bearded old man on a small island. They would rather stay here and bitch about Cuba.

Deport the bastards. If they want Castro out, let THEM do something about it.
