115. Actually, Kerry has already done it.
Kerry used to claim that he did not think that Bush would have "F-ed it up as badly as he did". They had it posted on Johnkerry.com for a while, but it looks like the offending word has since been edited out. They still have "shit" on johnkerry.com, however.

But that wasn't a getting personal with the use of the word in that context. What Dick said was a personal insult to Senator Leahy...

Cheney is just making a fool of himself when he does stuff like that and Kerry does not help himself when he does it.

116. Found the link for the profanity.
http://www.johnkerry.com/pressroom/clips/news_2003_1202a.html

"Did I expect Howard Dean to go off to the left and say, "I'm against everything"? Sure. Did I expect George Bush to f*** it up as badly as he did? I don't think anybody did." - John Kerry December 2, 2003

They recently took three letters out of the word so the kiddies don't get corrupted if they read it.

Anyway, see you on the board there Swamp Rodent.....

A first.

A Vice President of the U.S. bellowing in the Senate, in response to a legitimate question about his proven involvement in the no-bid award of an Iraq contract to Halliburton, and his continued lies denying it, using street profanity. How many older contributors, especially older women, who despise the "F" word will now abandon Bush/Cheney in November???

Sorry, Dickie, as usual you got it back-asswords. You and your puppet Dubya are "fucked", you lying "muthafuckah"! :wtf:

I gather the "f" word is acceptable on DU, given the number of times it appears on this thread.

In the absence of any transcript my mind reels. There are so many things Cheney could have put after that word: F... the Constitution, the economy, the Geneva conventions, the truth, democracy, the voters, the dis-enfranchised voters, the environment... the possibilities are endless!

31. here's what the CNN reporter said
Leahy and Cheney were in the well of the Senate for the official portrait of the Congress. Cheney made a comment to Leahy about "not appreciating" Leahy's pursuit of Halliburton. Leahy said something about Cheney once calling him a "bad Catholic." Cheney then made the FU comment.

Leahy was quoted as saying today that he thought Cheney was just having a bad day. (brilliant)

Cheney's office said "It doesn't sound like the kind of language the vice president would use."

A non denial denial.

I doubt there's any video or audio of the moment.

Remeber, that twit Tucker Carlson, even noted that he was present with Bush and Karen Hughes at some meeting where Bush was liberally using the "F" word. Tucker mentioned it to Karen later and she responded the president"never uses that kind of language." Of course Tucker couldn't BELIEVE that Karen would outright LIE ABOUT SUCH A THING!

56. I dont think Leahys letting Cheney off the hook was a brilliant response
It allows others like Judy Woodruff to laugh it merrily off and
say,

<< hahahaha, boy, that cute vice president of ours, hes kinda feisty aint he!? >>

To say hes having a bad day once again lets him off the hook.

Most Republicans like Cheney and/or Delay live for those types of outbursts from Democrats and will not hesitate to even make something up as to monopolize and cast their *own shadow* onto the Dems.

Trent Lott comes to mind with his unbelievably unforgiveable Paul Wellstone antics.

Im amazed anyone would give Dick Cheney such a leash with all that he has potentially committed against this nation. His arrogance is astounding.

Hes the Vice President. He behaves in a fashion no more mature than a five year old when he doesnt get his way.

Not to mention, what type of individual says he has *other priorities* than going to Vietnam?

Dick Cheney felt he had other priorities more important than every other 18 to 20 year old boy being shipped over to Vietnam.

Im sure every other American kid who went to Vietnam and got their leg, arm or both blown off and/or those kids that never came back to see their families and loved ones felt the same way.

What an embarassing disgrace of a person. And hes our Vice President.

57. I'm sick up and fed with non-Catholics...
...casting aspersions on the 'quality of faith' of Catholics. Much of Canon Law is subject to interpretation, and many times even the clerical hierarchy of the Church does not agree on interpretations.

So for Protestants, Jews, Muslims or any non-Catholic (or even lay Catholics) to say "you're a bad Catholic" is presumptuous at best, and patently offensive in any event.

74. Its not about Cannon Law...
Its about the most basic tenents of the religion. Remeber those 10 rules? How many has cheney broken? How often?
You can not reasonably expect being a religious person to mean ANYTHING if you are not going to allow anyone to make even the most basic judgement about your adhering to your principles.
Cheney has lied he has arguably murdured he has stolen... I think poor christian/catholic is a fair critisim. You have to remember that he opened the door by bringing his religious crap into the public debate/arena so prominently. Don't want us to judge you on it then don't claim we should vote for you based on it.

...because he is pro-choice, that has to do with Canon Law.

Based on the national rhetoric from the RW in recent weeks re: Kerry's pro-choice stance and his standing in the Church, I'm just assuming that's what 'Dick' was getting at.

Note to Dick, in terms you'll understand: It's none of your fucking business. Now you can either fuck off or go fuck yourself. :grr:

58. What Leahy should have said:
Yeah, well, I didn't appreciate getting that anthrax letter either -- you boys ever gonna look for the people who did that, who somehow got hold of the Ames strain of anthrax which is only made in a handful of labs associated with the US military? It's only been been 32 months -- I know, Ashcroft did pick up some prostitutes in New Orleans. Glad the executive branch is on the job. Keep up the good work, champ.

81. actually, there probably is some video
I would imagine that there was some video running as they gathered for the photo and the photographer would have lots of pix, no doubt. CNN's report didn't make it real clear when it happened -- apparently as they were milling about preparing for the photo, I'd guess. So almost certainly there will not be any audio. Whether we'll ever see the video now, who knows? But I know that, in the past, I have seen videos on C-SPAN of members preparing for their "class picture" to be taken.

We'll know how much the media mood has turned by whether or not they do dig out the video. Of course, the mere fact that this got reported is some satisfaction.

38. Senate Photo Op for Cheney....
Apparently this was sup post to have been the yearly photo op for Cheney. Da Dick, who's been furious at Senator Lehay(?) for stirring up the Halliburton/cheney crooked policies, confronted Lehay. I don't know what Lehay said back...but crooked cheney yelled at Senator Lehay calling him 'a bad catholic.' Again, what Senator Lehay said was not specific....but Cheney lost his temper and told Senator Lehay, 'go fuck yourself.'

I hope it's on tape and MoveOn.org can make it into a campaign ad.

Well, yes, it does...really. But mature adults know there's a time and place for everything, and cursing a fellow senator on the floor of the US Senate is NOT the time or place for such attempts at conflict resolution better left to bar rooms and back alleys.

The "adults" are definitely NOT "back in charge."

Cheney, the bunker guy, the pretentious, extremely wealthy, defacto president of the United STates, not elected but burdened with George Bush the stupid, loses it on the Senate floor.

Bwhahahah--just makes me laugh when I think of him and Bush, holding hands to "testify" refusing to do so under oath and holding each other's hand, before the 9-11 commission.

And now we have the normally, statesmanlike, perfectly stable and sober Patrick Leahy being told by this filthy scum of the Halliburton shame, to fuck yourself.

Bwahahah -

It just strikes me as funny

- if Cheney had a cane in his hand,he probably would have assaulted Leahy and beat him over the head with it and then may have died from the exertion.

98. This incident is MOST revealing. In a MOST appealing way:
Don't know if we've had any evidence, til now, of cheney losing his cool in public. He's usually well-guarded and as tight-lipped and unforthcoming as it's possible to be. Gotta maintain that look and air of the in-command executive, as he was used to seeing himself as CEO of Halliburton. After all, a CEO is next to god, in the minds of a lot of these "bidness" types.

It strongly suggests to me that all this stuff is REALLY starting to get to cheney. Perhaps he's starting to feel some real heat - but - about what I'm not sure, because there's just so damned much!

He could have heard about bush talking to the prosecutor in the Plame Game, AND maybe he knows what was said (ie: something potentially VERY incriminating about him, OR about people close to him, which still tightens the proverbial noose uncomfortably around his own neck). OR, Torturegate is starting to get to him - or get a little too close to him. OR perhaps it's starting to get to him how he's the one who looks like the BIG ASSHOLE for maintaining there was a link between al Qaeda and Saddam. (Mind you, 9-11 commission lapdog John Lehman - yes, another republi-CON - very recently floated the theory that one of Saddam's top military people was an al Qaeda operative, something debunked, publicly, by the CIA less than 24 hours later.) He could be on edge because of the renewed outbreaks of violence in Iraq, just today, or what he knows about "Fahrenheit 9/11" - which he also knows will be in theaters across the country TOMORROW. (Mind you, it's already playing in theaters in NYC, where the republi-CONS expect to collect so many flowers and sweets from the people on the streets for their upcoming convention, and maybe he's heard back from spies who've seen it, or who've gone to screenings to gauge public reaction.) Or he could be pissed that he hasn't been able to keep Leahy (and others) permanently intimidated and silenced and docile like little lambs, and that Leahy has the temerity to question his almighty omnipotence. I mean, HOW DARE that Patrick Leahy get uppity when he should still be capitulating all over the place and falling down on his knees in worship of the great and mighty dick? cheney's probably wondering - "doesn't he realize WHO I AM?!?!?!??!?!!?"

Or it could be a combination of these things.

At any rate, the heat is starting to get to him, now, too. CLEARLY. LOVE IT! AND, to add insult to injury, this was overheard, and picked up on, AND reported. So MORE people now know that something's starting to get to him. Bad for his image. And I guarantee you that somebody like him, who's been around as long as he has, and who's been a player not only in the executive branch, but also in Congress, knows this. He KNOWS something wicked HIS way comes.

I remember, too, how mean and sometimes snarling my dad turned toward the end of his life, when he realized that something, finally, was bigger and badder than he was. It was his diabetes, which was unrelenting - and indeed finally killed him. This was something he couldn't manipulate, couldn't yell at, couldn't stare down, couldn't fire, couldn't sue, or even threaten to sue, couldn't intimidate, couldn't threaten anything else against, either, and it bugged the living daylights out of him. He was NOT used to not being in total control, and having to be under the thumb of something WAY bigger than he was. He did NOT like losing control, and losing the upper hand, and he took out his frustrations on those of us around him (funny thing about that diabetes, it doesn't ever get intimidated). I'd bet our little dickie-boy is suffering the same way, only without the diabetes.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/06/24/cheney.leahy/

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Typically a break from partisan warfare, this year's Senate class photo turned smiles into snarls as Vice President Dick Cheney reportedly used a profanity toward one senior Democrat, sources said.
Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, who was on the receiving end of Cheney's ire, confirmed that the Vice President used profanity during Tuesday's class photo.
A spokesman for Cheney confirmed there was a "frank exchange of views."
Using profanity on the Senate floor while the Senate is session is against the rules. But the Senate was technically not in session at the time and the normal rules did not apply, a Senate official said.

According to Senate rules, profanity is not permitted in the chamber. But when the exchange occurred between Leahy and Cheney, the Senate was not in session so there was technically no foul.

http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=5509471

I'd like to see the actual rule because, somehow, I doubt that it actually draws a distinction between when the Senate is in or out of session.

Could we impeach him as president of the Senate, now, too???

of Joseph Goebbels sitting in a chair, sneering at him as though he were about to gas him.

Cheney and Bush both are having a problem keeping the mask of jollity up in public. I mark it as a symptom of their despair, anger, and comtempt.

And you have to imagine how much despair they must feel-- sinking fast and knowing that there are so few bits of good news left to trot out. Not even catching Osama would be a sure thing. Not since they had to repudiate their own terror report.

They fear a Madrid event would catalize an overwhelming, party destroying response from voters. I think they have reason to fear this.

repugs are. maybe they are even crazzzzzzy. I gore, dean, kerry, and clinton are mentally unstable for displaying a temper. shouldn't that apply to cheney.

dignity to the WH and to wear suits.

Well, he did have his suit on.

Think of it this way - whenever that image from the photoshoot is shown in the archives of the U.S. Govt - it will be known for all time that the VP of the US cussed the Dem Minority of the Judiciary Committee on that day and at that appearance. It's recorded forever in history! Hooray! Hooray!

Did Cheney Curse Out Senator?
Vice President Cheney cursed at Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy during a confrontation on the Senate floor while members were having their annual group picture taken earlier this week, Leahy and Senate sources said Thursday.

Senate aides with knowledge of the encounter Tuesday said the vice president confronted Leahy about some of the Democrat's criticism about alleged improprieties in Iraq military contracts awarded to Halliburton Co. Cheney, who as vice president is president of the Senate, is a former CEO of Halliburton.

Leahy responded by saying the vice president had once called him a "bad" Catholic.

Cheney then responded, "F--- off" or "F--- you," two aides said, both speaking on condition of anonymity.

http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=politicsNews&storyID=5510084

<snip>

According to congressional aides, Leahy said hello to Cheney following the taking of the Senate group photo on the floor of the chamber.

Cheney, who is president of the Senate, then ripped into Leahy for the Democratic senator's criticism this week of alleged war profiteering in Iraq by Halliburton, the oil services company that Cheney once ran.

Leahy and other Democrats have called for congressional hearings into whether the vice president helped the firm win lucrative contracts in Iraq after the U.S.-led war that toppled Saddam Hussein.

During their exchange, Leahy noted that Republicans had accused Democrats of being anti-Catholic because they are opposed to some of President Bush's anti-abortion judges, the aides said.

That's when Cheney unloaded with the "F-bomb," aides said.

Love in the CNN article the way the White House spokesperson spun it - a "frank exchange of views". I wonder if from now on kids sent to the principal's office for using the f word in class or on the playing fields will be able to get out of detention by explaining they were having a frank exchange of views?

as he's lied about "not" saying things about the war that proved untrue, then we can IMPEACH him. Because we all know lying about personal indiscretions warrants impeachment and removal from office.

"Cheney Utters 'F-Word' in U.S. Senate?"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) blurted out the "F word" at Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont during a heated exchange on the Senate floor, congressional aides said on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in a terse discussion between the two that touched on politics, religion and money, with Cheney finally telling Leahy to "f--- off" or "go f--- yourself," the aides said.

<snip>

"That doesn't sound like language the vice president would use but there was a frank exchange of views," said Cheney spokesman Kevin Kellems.

<snip>

Cheney, who is president of the Senate, then ripped into Leahy for the Democratic senator's criticism this week of alleged war profiteering in Iraq (news - web sites) by Halliburton, the oil services company that Cheney once ran.
