Kerry campaign says Bush plays with truth on terrorism

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites)'s campaign accused the Bush administration of "playing fast and loose" with terrorism figures in a sharply revised report issued for last year.

The Kerry campaign seized on new State Department figures that double the number of terrorism victims reported in 2003 to renew its attacks on President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s credibility ahead of the November election.

"This revised report is just the latest example of an administration playing fast and loose with the truth when it comes to the war on terror," spokesman Phil Singer said in a statement.

The Democratic offensive came with a new poll showing Kerry creeping ahead of Bush in voter confidence in their ability to deal with terrorism, an issue that had been the president's major strength early in the campaign.
