Schwarzenegger films would trigger FCC equal time rule
hasta la vista Arnold!!!! (is this too good to be true?)

"Films and television shows featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger and other celebrity candidates in California's gubernatorial recall election will likely not be broadcast in the state for the next few months so that stations can avoid having to give rival candidates equal time.

The airing of "Total Recall" or another Schwarzenegger film, or a repeat of a "Diff'rent Strokes" episode with Gary Coleman on broadcast television in California would trigger the Federal Communications Commission's equal time provision, allowing other candidates to demand the same amount of time."

1. Uh - Reagan's FCC overturned this rule in 1987....
Edited on Tue Aug-12-03 05:16 PM by Richardo
...and was upheld by the US Court of Appeals by a 2 to 1 ruling.

Bonus question: Who were the two Appeals Court justices that upheld the demolition of the equal time provision?

Answer: (highlight this line) Robert Bork and Antonin "Anthony" Scalia

How's that for your vast right wing conspiracy?

2. There is no equal time provision.
Edited on Tue Aug-12-03 05:23 PM by SoCalDem
If they are voluntarily removing them, that's good, but they are doing it so that they do not get angry phone calls and letters...not to complay with any laws..

Those laws were 86ed by Reagan..:(

Too bad they are not still in force :(

6. Not true. The equal time provision is Sec 315 and it is still alive and
well to my knowledge. The FAIRNESS doctrine which allows for equal time for opposing opinions on ISSUES is what was stripped.

7. Bwahahahaha...imagine having to give equal time to 100+ contenders
If they even had to give equal time to the last week's coverage - they would probably be on the air nonstop for the next month! Just thinking about it gives me the giggles - just think how happy Californians would be with Issa and the GOP and the papparazzicable news shows (for their initial coverage of arnie) if their tvs were jammed with "obscure coverage of each obscure candidate" for the next month. LOL. Now that would create some back lash.

Think of it as the ultimate survivor show!

Hey - wasn't Fox going to do a reality candidate show - they should just devote the next two months to covering all 100+ candidates for governor in California - think how cheap the production costs for them would be. LOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

8. yes, equal time still exists when talking about elections
there is a valid equal time provision in regards to announced candidates for political office. The equal time provision that applied to varying points of view on general news and entertainment shows was lifted during the Reagan administration. Since Ahnold is a declared candidate for office, they probably shouldn't show his movies if the stations want to avoid a possible legal challenge. Interesting!

4. Oh No...No Terminator on Fox Movie Channel???
I don't think Ahnuld has much to worry, he's getting a ton of free TV time (with no rebuttal) and it's considered "news"...thus outside any equal time provisions.

All this means is that Calfornia TV stations can't show his movies until after the election, but that doesn't apply to outside signals (aka Cable Channels)

Now wasn't Busatamonte in Born in East LA? <g>

It was released on July 2nd. It's number 10 currently at the box office. It kinda came and went. Too bad, maybe he could've stayed out of politics if it had done better. :P

that has to be the reason he jumped on this bandwagon after telling everyone he wouldn't. Movie promotion, because his movie bombed. Boy I bet he'll be pissed if he wins.

according to an A&E commercial I saw today. That certainly is not fair, and am sure it won't be totally revealing.

16. What about Porn Star Mary Carey or comedian Gallagher?
" With a porn publisher (Larry Flynt) and a porn star (Mary Carey) running, along with a former child TV star (Gary Coleman), a comedian (Gallagher) and a woman whose sole claim to fame is that she is famous (billboard star Angelyne), the recall campaign has taken on the air of a circus."

If I watch them do have to rent an Arnoud movie too?

21. Don't forget Gallagher, the comedian. He is a candidate too!
And Gary Coleman, and the other 200 candidates. Everytime you show one candidate, you have to give equal time to the other 200.

Is that what you want? Because is that what you want, it means that Davis won't be on TV unless they have the other candidates getting equal time in front of the cameras.
