Bush urging Head Start overhaul
Edited on Mon Jul-07-03 04:48 AM by JudiLyn
Bush urging Head Start overhaul

(snip) White House-AP -- President Bush is making a pitch today for overhauling the Head Start program -- as he gets set to leave tonight on a five-day trip to Africa.

The president's touring a Head Start center in Washington's Maryland suburbs before urging Congress to make changes in the program, which is up for renewal this year.

Head Start helps nearly a (m) million three- and four-year-olds from low-income families prepare for kindergarten.

Bush and House Republicans want to let a handful of states merge their federal programs with other state-run pre-school plans. They say it'll improve performance. (snip/...)

Report: Plan offers a weak Head Start
Group opposes proposal to give 8 states control

By RUTH SCHUBERT
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

President Bush is pushing a plan to give some states control over Head Start, the 38-year-old program for poor children and their families.

But Gov. Gary Locke, for one, doesn't want it.

"He has taken a position being opposed to this demonstration project," said Robin Zukoski, Locke's executive policy adviser.

"The reasons for that are the concerns that it would dilute Head Start's traditional high standards and also that there isn't sufficient funding to allow those states to administer the program."

Those arguments are at the center of a report being released today by the Children's Defense Fund, one of the leading groups opposing Republican-backed legislation that would hand over Head Start funding to eight states in a five-year demonstration project. The states have not been designated yet. (snip/...)

1. If he had his way
he would triple funding to Head Start and mandate that only families who have incomes above 60,000.00 are elegible for the program.

2. Remember the "Reformer with Results" BS during 2000?
I have since come to believe that this is true.

Reformer: Bush
Results: Disaster

This guy turns everything he touches to shit (the reverse Midas effect).

8. Help save Head Start
Please take the time today to send an email message or letter opposing the proposal that would dismantle Head Start, the most successful early childhood development program of its kind in the United States. Since 1965, more than 20 million at-risk children – including nearly 1 million in 2002 alone -- have benefited from Head Start’s emphasis on making America’s most vulnerable kids “ready to learn” in school.

Use the form on this page to send an email to your member of the U.S. House of Representatives, two U.S. Senators and the governor of your state. They need to hear from you that Head Start should be preserved as it exists today and that its funding should be increased so that it can help all the children who are eligible to benefit from its services.

10. Yes but
you can't save head Start or any New Deal, Great Society or New Frontier program or Clinton people legislation from the ax as long as these people are in power. There are fewer and fewer people to listen and the GOP is looking for ways to lead you on and look great for the fall.

Smirk will just giggle at the execution.

18. Jeez, what a revelation
First, THANKS for providing the opportunity for us to contact our Congress people and our governors on this issue.

Was I SURPRISED filling in the information on the form you provided to learn that my two state REPUBLICAN SENATORS suddenly don't take e-mail. I'll just bet they were getting too much negative feed-back from us.

I know this is recent because I just heard from one of them recently on the Cuban embargo in response to an e-mail I sent him.

IS THIS WIERD, OR WHAT?

Thanks, prolesunited. It's a real aid to DU'ers.

9. and the Pentagon
is still free to lose billions of taxpayer dollars every year. Is there a brave Democrat who will speak up about what really needs to be overhauled in this country?

Of course, the real agenda is to make education available only to the wealthy.

11. He's touring a Head Start Program? It's the kiss of death!
Lordy but I am somehow moving beyond intense dislike--and I never thought it was possible to dislike anyone's policies more than his. Amazing how we've all united in our dislike for the Republican cruelty, isn't it...

So let me get this straight--we don't want to educate anybody and we don't want to make any attempt to head off the inequities that we KNOW exist. Just for good measure, why don't we do away with aything resembling affirmative action just so we can be sure and keep poor people down a little longer.

I'm rapidly coming to understand the mindset of the folks who cheered when Marie Antionette went to the chopping block.

14. Turn it over to the
cash straped states where it has no chance of getting funded. I strongly suspect that is Bush's plan for just about every social program out there.

Yeah, hes' a Reformer with Results alright. The results suck.
