"Two suspects were arrested and the car which resembled the vehicle used in the attack was seized," said General Turhan Yussef.
The suspects' homes had been searched and police turned up their identity cards, linking them to Saddam's Special Security Organisation.
They were turned over to the US military for interrogation.
Mr Talabani and his bodyguard died in a hail of bullets yesterday outside his home in Kirkuk, 255km north of Baghdad.
