Growth puffs up Florida's voter rolls
ST. AUGUSTINE -- Just a little more than a decade ago, Florida's oldest city was still a sleepy tourist town.

Then came a torrent of new residents, who helped double St. Johns County voting rolls since 1990.

''We have just gone wild since then,'' said the county's supervisor of elections, Penny Halyburton, a 33-year veteran of Northeast Florida elections.

But even in a booming area where new golf-course communities seem to crop up monthly, one barometer of growth seems far-fetched: 90 percent of the adults are registered to vote in St. Johns County, according to a Herald analysis of U.S. Census statistics and state voter registration data.

Election experts caution that a registration rate higher than 75 percent indicates that counties are carrying many voters on their rolls who either don't vote or don't live there anymore -- voters known as ``deadwood.''

1. Didn't they put Tom Pendergast in Leavenworth for this.
10,000 dead Jackson county Dems>?

And why is the Election Supervisor named Halyburton?

Inquiring minds...

2. I live three miles from the St Johns County Border
trust me, Dead voters vote every year, as they do in my county, one ofd the counties that werev accused of preventing the largest numbers of voters in the state from voting. I sat at my polling station and watched a few thounsad dems turned away, but not one republican.(asked afterwards as angry people came out). I suspected there would be some chicnery in this area of the state but was astounded by the outright blatency.

Were you working the polls? If not, try it. That is a sure fire way to stop any problems. I have done this for over 13 years and I have helped countless numbers of people vote who would otherwise have found it too confusing or tedious.
