Global Gay NewsPresident Bush has manipulated science to support his political ideology, according to a new report, producing an AIDS policy that is misleading and inaccurate.
The report, from the minority staff of the House Committee on Government Reform, says the Bush administration has relentlessly suppressed and gagged scientific reports that were against its political views. --
- the administration took steps to remove information about condom use from the national Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, as well as data showing that comprehensive sex education does not lead to increased sexual activity among teenagers.
On top of this, the report says Bush repeatedly appointed "numerous people with political, rather than scientific credentials" to advisory positions, including Jerry Thacker to the Advisory Council on HIV and AIDS. Thacker hit the headlines because of him calling AIDS a “gay plague” and homosexuality a “deathstyle”.
The report states that this "political interference with science” has led to misleading statements by the president and inaccurate responses, with particular reference to its AIDS policy.
Speaking to US newspaper the New York Times, the White House said the report is “riddled with distortion”.
