Palm Beach PostThe nonpartisan sheriff's race is causing some partisan heartburn in the Palm Beach County GOP.
Prominent Republican moneyman Tom DeRita's support for registered Democrat Ken Eggleston in the sheriff's contest has led the county party to schedule a rare vote Wednesday on whether to boot DeRita from his Republican Executive Committee post.
DeRita -- who has helped raise campaign bucks for U.S. Rep. Mark Foley, R-West Palm Beach, and state Sen. Ken Pruitt, R-Port St. Lucie -- raised eyebrows in June when he and former county Democratic Chairman Monte Friedkin teamed up as co-chairs of Eggleston's finance committee.
County GOP Chairman Sid Dinerstein last month asked DeRita to resign or face a removal vote. As of Friday, DeRita was preparing for a showdown at Wednesday night's party meeting. ---
