http://www.voanews.com/article.cfm?objectID=16F51617-694A-4E62-9CDD42BBCC6A0B76

McLaughlin, who is expected to step in as acting director in July when Director George Tenet leaves, has worked for the intelligence agency for more than 30 years, specializing in Europe and the former Soviet Union.

He has been deputy director since his appointment by President Clinton in 2000. He will serve as acting director of the CIA until a permanent successor to Mr. Tenet is found.

Previously, Mr. McLaughlin was deputy director for Intelligence, a post in which he tracked political, economic and military events worldwide.

He also created several permanent programs within the agency, including the first comprehensive training institute for new CIA employees.

Before joining the CIA in 1972, Mr. McLaughlin was in the U.S. Army for three years. His military experience includes a one-year tour in Southeast Asia in 1968.

2. I wonder what his role in the power struggle
..between the pro-Chalabi Pentagon intelligence unit and the anti-Chalabi CIA will be. This is developing into a pretty clearcut power struggle, and it's getting to the point that network news won't be able to ignore the whole business much longer.

I think this is all of a part, that the Plame outing was a warning shot to the CIA to play ball with the trumped up reasons for an ill-considered war against Iraq, much of which seems to have come from the Pentagon's most favored source, Chalabi.

Although I doubt we mere rabble will ever know the true extent of all this, it's still going to be lots of fun to watch. The best outcome woud be a total discrediting of the Pentagon's intelligence function, and an abandonment thereof. After all, this is the second disastrous big war they've lied us into.

5. That's the one
A cadre of rabid anticommunists in the Pentagon came up with the trumped-up Gulf of Tonkin incident and a pack of lies surrounding it, plus a ridiculous theory that if Vietnam went communist all the rest of southeast Asia would follow in lockstep (ignoring the very real differences in culture and longstanding rivalries in the region and took this country into a huge, protracted disaster of a war.

Now another bunch of cracpot theorists (Straussian Zionist imperialists) has concocted another war which is developing into a disaster even more quickly than Vietnam did.

Once is a terrible mistake. Twice is the beginning of a very bad habit.
