America's Last Confederate Widow Dies
The nation has lost a historic lady. Mrs. Alberta Martin, the last known widow of a Confederate soldier, died on Memorial Day. She was 97 and a living link to history of which most Americans know little or nothing.

Mrs. Martin was born on December 4, 1906, at Dannely's Crossroads, Coffee County, Alabama. The small country intersection has changed little since her birth.

"Miss Alberta" was born into a sharecropper family. They went wherever there was work for planters and pickers. She learned the hard work of picking cotton at a young age.

Alberta married W.J. Martin in 1927. Martin was 82 and Alberta was 21. He had been a Confederate soldier over 60 years before they married.

snip...

Mrs. Martin spent much time with members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and she believed in flying the Confederate Cross of St. Andrew. In 2000 she participated in a rally in Columbia, South Carolina to support the flag which then flew on the state capitol. Though in a wheel chair, Alberta held her Southern flag and proudly waved it.

In 1996, Mrs. Alberta Martin was escorted to the National Convention of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Richmond, Virginia. As she entered the meeting hall, everyone there stood and sang "Dixie."

1. One more crazy bitch is dead
if she was messing with those Confederate sons-of-bitches in Richmond she can't have had any sense.

What 21 year old girl marries an 82 year old man? And you can't call her a widow of the Confederate War if she didn't marry him until 60 years after it.

3. It's weirder than that!
After her elderly hubby died, she married his grandson.

6. Jeez how about a little respect for the dead
We don't really know the reason for her marriage to the guy. Perhaps she was in deperate economic need...she was married during the depression. This was not all that uncommon.

8. What I saw on TV
Her 1st husband died in the war leaving her with either 2 or 3 small children. She married the 81 year old for convenience - or that's what was commonly thought - until they had their own baby.

10. Not at all surprising
During the 19th century economic necessity was the primary reason for marriage, particularly among rural and town folk. As the nation became more prosperous that tendency began to diappear, but was still not uncommon well into the 20th Century.

12. Heck - it's still around
When my sister got remarried to a jerk her explanation was that she needed help with the kids and besides, according to her, who would want a woman with 3 kids?

Hmmmmm.... O.K. I am now convinced Kerry is wasting his money there.

11. Don't get too discouraged
While I don't think Kerry will take Virginia, it is changing. These SCV people are at the fringe and are not representative of the big majority of the population.
